Sadly this is consistent with other polling results I've read from S. Korea.

S. Korean cadets’ views shaped by a skewed education

NOTE: If that link doesn't work try going to http://www.stripes.com/ and search for "S. Korean cadets’ views shaped by a skewed education" or search for that on Google. The link works for me but some are saying it's broken.

Teachers told them about the U.S. Military Academy at West Point class of 1950, whose cadets graduated less than a month before the start of the Korean War. Nearly 50 of those cadets were killed.

“The [KMA] cadets were shocked. They said, ‘We didn’t know that,’” Kim said.

The cadets told academy officials they had leftist teachers in middle and high school who told them the United States was trying to dominate South Korea.

“The young cadets were kind of victims of the wrong education. They were kind of indoctrinated by the wrong education, the wrong textbooks,” Kim said. “Youngsters have no idea what was the Korean War, what was the contribution by the United States. They’ve been educated with a different perspective for the past 10 years.”

Because of the survey, the academy began using a more U.S.-friendly history textbook that Kim said was “based on facts rather than opinions.”

Today, more than half of South Korean high schools are still using the old textbooks, published by a company called Golden Star, said Shin Sun-ho, an education researcher for the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

Shin said a few South Korean politicians have criticized the book for being sympathetic to North Korea, but he said that wasn’t the case.

“If it was, it wouldn’t have been adopted as a textbook by the government,” he said.

The textbook is used in elective history courses for 11th- and 12th-graders.

How insulting to all the people who died and risked their lives to help S. Korea. I hope these leftist assholes know that without the US they'd be on a farm making Kim Chee for Kim Il Jong or going through the trash looking for food right now!

I agree with you,,,, your kinda racist though.... iM South Korea,,,, Though Some can be little b1tches....
I definetly thank America alot....

I dont think we eat kimchi 24/7 though
But ur most definetly right
We would probably be worshipping the [email protected] [Kim Jong il] if we were saved by Americans

So any S.Koreans who hate americans are totally fcked up!!!!

I think if they hate americans so much,,,, S.Korea wouldn't be an Advanced Asian Country....
We wont have tvs, Break Dancing , and baseball and all em stuff

I totally thank USA....

I'm not putting the whole country down, just certain political elements in the country who sit around enjoying their prosperity while bitching about the things that made it possible.

So, are you trying to say that there'd be a South Korea right now without American help? I know it's not like they didn't participate in the war, but still... I think they would have lost without help.

And yes, I realize that the US wouldn't help just to be nice, but the fact is that they did help for whatever reason, Americans died, and other Americans came close to dying. I think that deserves more respect than it gets in S. Korea in general.

fine i can agree with politics and such being hidden but korea also helped the US in a war.....Vietnam....korea sent men to vietnam to help pay back for the help they had received...my uncle was in that war and he survived to tell me stories of what happened there helping the US soldiers

I think your right!!!
Korea helped US in the iraq war and the vietnam war.... It mines their relations with the US are very close

but I agree with u!!!!

It was from the Korean military:

SEOUL — When the Korea Military Academy asked its incoming cadets in 2004 to name South Korea’s main enemy, they were shocked at the answer: 34 percent said the United States while only 33 percent said North Korea.

The URL was broken because CR was translating "&" to "&" in the URL, but I fixed it by using tinyurl.

No, if you think about it, it makes sense. While the younger generation doesn't necessarily hate NK, we do resent KJI. On the other hand, it is the YOUTH that dislike America, and since its mandatory for all men to serve, you are going to get all those anti-US young guys serving. Thats why it was only aruond 30% and not 100%. So a minority in SK thinks the US is the enemy, big deal. A VAST majority of the US disapproves of Bushes job, but apparently that doesn't matter either.

Are you trying to be fucking racist? If you are, I do not appreciate your BS. If not, my apologies.

No... why? I never said that ALL Korean people think this.

The only thing I can see here that might seem offensive is the comment about Kim Chee, but I'm not making fun of Korean people. That was intended to make fun of Kim Il Jong and his screwed up world. (I actually like kim chee, just not the kind that has lots of anchovy paste in it.)

(BTW, your avatar is a bit obnoxious in it's consumption of vertical screen space when posted in threads. I thought there was a rule saying you couldn't have an avatar that's taller than 500px or something, actually.)

Of course it matters. Bush is an idiot.... he's like the Republican Jimmy Carter. But luckily he's going away at the end of the year.

I think the key thing about the stats is that even 30% of highly educated students come out thinking that the US is the biggest enemy and don't know basic things about US participation in the Korean war. This is less of a public opinion indicator and more of an indicator of bias in the educational system, basically people trying to teach students to think this. (Read the whole article. Link fixed in original post.)

The US has it's own problems with teachers trying to politically brainwash students as well. This kind of thing pisses me off in the US and anywhere else it happens. In closed totalitarian societies it's pretty much expected, but it's just sad as hell when it happens in places that aren't totalitarian.

Ok, I won't. When I posted it I didn't think it would.

Also, i'm sure many moderators have seen my avatar, but didn't say anything against it

Still though, you take up most of my browser window with blank space if you post a message that isn't several paragraphs. I dont know why you'd want to cause such awkward page layout....
