I've been in AP for all of my high school years and I feel it's been a total waste. Even if you work your butt off, it doesn't mean you'll get into a college at all these days. As my teacher put it, it's a circle. If you have a 4.0 GPA, have this great resume, etc., but this other kid who has the exact same qualifications yet comes from an affluent family, (and say you're parent doesn't even know what an SAT is), they will pick the kid from an affluent family. I hate this corruption. Yah, life isn't fair, but still. I thought America was about opportunities? What kind of opportunities is this if we're keeping the poor, poor, and the rich, rich?
College is the base to success (most of the time). And if you corrupt the base, what's the point of those with a poorer background to try? I don't know if it's true, but it seems so with the kind of college reps and student's I've been around.
Anyone else think college is corrupted some way?
(please don't post if you're going to say something incredibly arrogant like "oh whatever, cry me a river" and crap. go get a life. I want to keep this serious.)

NO! Its fake man! teachers just say that to scare you into studying more. But its not like that, for the united states anyways.

here, in the USA, we dont have enough skilled people (University Graduates) to work on the stuff we need. Thats why we keep getting people form other countries all the time. The colleges LOVE to have you , and they will accept you easily. I didnt give SAT man. I duel enrolled, i was in high school AND was taking some community college credits. After that I just transfered to a university. No hassle no SAT ... all this stuff the teachers tell u is fake, they want to scare you to make u study more, thats it. EVERY ONE in united states can go to university. And about money ... FAFSA! STUDENT LOANS!! Its the best investment you will ever make. And they give student loan to every one...so dont get scared, and dont study to much in high school (lol)!!

i dont come from a affluent family, that is why i bust my ass in AP for 4 years. and it paid off, i became valedictorian and got about $40,000 worth of scholarship and grants.
my parents didnt know what the SATs were and they only knew thru the newspapers, i had to do everything myself.

but i agree there is corruption, things like this do happen. there is also things put in the system to change some of these things like affirmative action and all that junk. i know some poor people who do get into a good college like syracuse university and never worked hard during high school.

the whole system is wack. they need something more stable and more of a standard in accepting students. good students shouldnt be turned down.

There are more than enough areas of higher education in the country. The only problem is that everyone is attempting to get into only the top 50 schools and everyone thinks if they can't get in there you'll be screwed. You have more than enough options to get into some sort of university and get a degree. It might not be the Ivy League, but there's a school out there for anyone who looks.

i dont know how is it in the US.. but here in my country (Philippine pride baby), we have alot of college graduates.. but couldn't find jobs... so they migrate to the US (your country)... hahaha.. i guess.. if you're determind and serious in getting a college degree, then you'll be admitted in any of your colleges there.. out here, we have this notion, that american kids (well most of them) are too lazy to study.. sorry dude.. just a notion.

bad news - high school grades don't count for shit in the real world, neither does the SAT. The ONLY and I do mean ONLY thing they do is get you into a good university. From there it's a matter of getting the right degree from the right institution with some practical experience as well. 3.0+realistic internships > 4.0+no internships.

Academics are a great thing, but they are far far from the only thing that matters when it comes to getting a good job.

Also, unless you are shooting for the top of the top ivy league programs or military academies... I can't imagine being a valedictorian with a 4.0 will get you rejected from anywhere. You may not get into the supreme school of your choice, but hell, there are plenty of great institutions that will welcome you with open arms that will do just fine when it comes to getting a job.

College is hard to get into...I was supposed to go to the University of Virginia, But I based the college I am going to off of softball. The one that I got the best offer from is the one that I took. It got between three, but I have above a 4.0 so I thought that I was ok....my SAT wasn't that great tho >.<....Lol I am guaranteed college tho now so it's all good!

Just don't give up is all I can say, I know it's tempting but don't do it!! And you're right, college's are unfair...40 g's a year is impossible! I'm not rich! I can't afford that, that is why I say get the best offer and take it.....I'm happy now, I don't have to worry about it! Stress is finally gone!!!

I'm in college now so I know. It's stupid; just more teachers teaching you things that contradict what you've previously been taught. What you have to remember though is that; like the song says~High School Never Ends!

Isn't it University that's more like that? College has a more laid-back type of atmosphere about those types of things from what I've seen.

It's called academic freedom. Universities/Colleges has as much right as the students to choose the people who enter their school.

For the top 50 college schools in your country, unless your grades show it, it'll be hard to get into them, however, there are thousands of colleges everywhere!! some not as expensive as you think. Besides, there is such a thing as student loan and scholarships and fundings.

But if you're set in going into a specific school. Your grades/performance better show it.

Jeez high school has nothing to do with college. I had no problem getting in to college it's staying there that's my problem. A public, 4-year university shouldn't cost so much. I believe my college is out to get students who aren't well off and they wonder why they have bad retention rates.

yea the admissions are wacked. my high school had a very poor ghetto background. So, the teachers aren't that great, the students are mostly slackers who gets by an AP class through copying. And the school work is barely hard. I honestly am not one of the slackers, so it was very easy for me to get a high GPA, had had a lot of extracirricular activies and just good everything, but bad compared to other schools outside my city. However, to the admissions, i'm a pretty good candidate, so I had a guaranteed back-up at a pretty good college. It was just that easy for me into a college. But now that im in this really tough university, there's all these kids who take AP and IB throughout their high school career, with super high SATS because they came from a more well-funded school in a better area. so yes, i had a freakin advantage compared to all these smartasses just because i went to a more disadvantage school. admissions does discriminate.
