Starcraft was considered the best rts game , no doubt about that.
But then after that decade, more great RTS game came out and tryin to dominate the genre....
here are my Top 10 list for the RTS after year 2000 (also included b4 year 2000 but just top 5 as my memory couldnt remeber that much game )

20th century
1# Starcraft (Brood war included of course )
2#Total annihilation (not 2.... just 1 as i didnt play the 2nd 1 )
3#Age of Empire 2 (i blive 1 is the first introduction to cheats in RTS.... no ? )
4# C&C Red Alert
5#Warcraft 2

And Finally.....

21st century (So far......)
10#Battle Realm
9#Stronghold crusaders
8#Company of heroes
7#C&C Red Alert 2
6#Rise of nations (not Legends tho.... i still prefer the civilization style)
5#Battle for Middle Earth 2
4# Warcraft 3 (sry guys.... not 1st..... good game tho)
3#Age of Mythology (addicting like hell!!!!!)
2#C&C Generals (plus zero hour)
1# Starcraft!!!!!!!!!! wakakaka ....just jk well it is definitely
Dawn of war : Dark Crusade (w/o patches still makes this 1 hell of a game to play)

I think yuri's revenge is not balanced. People like wc3 because of the hero system. But I think SC is the best since it lasted for a long long time.for simplicity, CC series are good. But I also like C&C Generals, though, I think it is also not balanced. GLA!!!

Starcraft is considered by many as the best RTS ever. However i think thats because it was just the most well known, blizz does good advertising

Like many, I'm going to have to go with Starcraft. Even now, Starcraft continues to dominate the RTS scene. It's three races are very well balanced, and every unit has its own unique purpose in the game. Unlike many RTS games out there, Starcraft does not use a "rock, paper, scissors" approach to unit management. By "rock, paper, scissors" I mean games in which the strategy consists of "My opponent is building infantry, so I should build cavalry" or "My opponent has a lot of cavalry, I should build artillery". In Starcraft, no one unit has a complete edge over another unit. Take Marines and Mutalisks for example. Marines are the Terran standard infantry. Mutalisks are the Zerg standard flyer unit. Although the Mutalisk is faster and does more damage than the Marine, the Marine actually has a longer range than the Mutalisk, making marines great for defending ledges and cliff sides against Mutalisks onslaughts. There are more examples I could bring up, but they don't really matter. What matters is that when Blizzard designed Starcraft, they did a good job, and it shows, because Starcraft is not only one of the best, but one of the most popular RTS games on the market.

By "dancing against melee" do you mean microing? If so, thats just a strategy, and any player can do it if they try hard enough. Dragoons are an excellent micro unit, but you have to know the dragoons attack range, and attack speed to do it properly. Although Microing is effective, its not necessarily a game aspect that makes the game unbalanced, as it takes time and skill to pull off, and is only effective in small scale combat.
