Shoujo girls are mostly portrayed as weak, clumsy(because guys find that oh so cute), and overall stupid (then you would get the scene where the smart hot guy teaches the girl). -_- Typical shoujo...
But there are also a few shoujo girls which i really like. Yuiko from beast master, Hikari from SA and few more. Basically i usually like them if they have some brains. |

I don't exactly agree with the basic strong girl/weak girl difference. The strong girls like in Special A, Vampire Knight or the likes sure are more bearable than the usual meek, weak, overly sweet classic shoujo heroine, but deep down... they're still so unrealistic. They are all pure, honest, straight forward, selfless, hard-working, etc. I actually enjoy shoujo where the heroines are not perfect, can get lazy, selfish, have flaws... I don't mean that they have to be horrible persons, just humans. Characters that a normal girl can identify with, not some kind of saint.
If I had to give examples... I'd say, the mangas from Setona Mizushiro (Xday, After School Nightmare), fuyumi soryo (Mars, ES, Doll), Ai Yazawa (Nana, Paradise Kiss), etc (well, most of them are josei, actually). I also enjoy the shoujo from the 90s. Then, shoujo didn't always mean drama, there were a lot of stories including elements such as time travelling, fantasy, action, and still a good romance, like in Red River or From Far Away. And the heroines kicked ass! |

I prefer a female character who isn't perfect, but show some independence and actually has some importantce in the plot. I hate the bitchy girls, and ones who are just cute and act only cute, and I also hate it when they basically dominate other characters of either the same or other gender. But then again many fangirls think that the mary-sue(which I believe both kinds of girls you specified in your post) characters are the best and most original characters ever created. |

Mary-Sue is my worst enemy. Seeing so much of them in manga, anime, fanfictions and such... I want to cry XD |

lienne03 wrote: hey can i ask something??? whats the difference between shougo, ouran, ecchi, yuri, smuts ???? Shoujo is a manga for young girls, usually love stories, or manga which concentrates on a female heroine, magical girl stories, etc (Card Captor Sakura, Fruits Basket, Vampire Knight...). Josei is a kind of shoujo for an older audience, with more mature characters and serious themes (Nana and the likes). Ecchi is not porn yet (that is hentai), but there are some pretty explicit scenes and sex-related content (works from Mayu Shinjo, yoshihara yuki...). Smut means pretty much the same thing (meaning: semi-explicit content ahead). Yuri (or shoujo-ai, but the latest term was made up in the USA) is used to talk about stories with lesbian themes, from a deep friendship between girls (and sometimes nothing more) to explicit female/female relationships (Maria-sama ga miteru, strawberry panic...). It's like reverse yaoi. Ouran is just an abreviation for the manga Ouran High School Host Club. If you need more precision, all of the above and more can be found on wikipedia. |

There are a lot of weak and desperate (in some cases) girls in shoujo manga.
The ones that are smart and strong are usually a quite dense. Even so, I still read shoujo. |

I know
That's why I don’t' really read shojo that much. The only ones I do read are ones where the heroine is strong , or just different from the typical weak heroines of shojo. Like Ouran High, Special A, and Perfect Girl Evolution. I love how in Ouran, even though Haruhi is weak physically, she has a great charter and is always helping the boys out and in Special A, how Hikari is really smart and strong, but still needs Kei to save her sometimes. In Perfect Girl Evolution, Sunako is really original and can kick butt, she’s really cool cos she doesn’t care about her looks and likes the things she likes, being all dark and stuff. It’s heroines like these I wish I could see more of in shojo. |
