hmmm...good point you got there.

"and shoujo manga girls are what japanese girls want to be." ???
-why would they want to be like that? in this day and age there is no such things as a knight in shining armor, you all have to look out for urselves ne? (well maybe im just too independent and headstrong thats why i'd hate showing my weaker side)

oh well, might as well find out for myself, I really wanna go to Japan. I wonder why nobody in my family takes me seriously lol hope I wont get deported for kicking someone's ass in a train, heard there're a lot of old pervs out there ne

Japan is a different culture at least in America we are taught that we can be whatever we want when we grow up. Its not really that they aren't but if you ask a Japanese girl what they want to be when they grow up the common answer is "a bride". Japan still has the mentality that girls stay in the kitchen and boys work. I wouldn't say its wrong so much as they still have their old ways. I would even say America discourages girls from wanting to be a wife or a mother because that is lowly and not a good job and you should try harder or be more. But there is nothing wrong with wanting to be either of those things at all.

Also there is nothing wrong with wanting to be girlie and graceful just as much as there is nothing wrong with a girl wanting to work construction. Japan just picks one over the other. I think America has the opposite problem of Japan that if a girl wants to be old fashioned then it is looked down on.

Just the same Japanese boys would be "gay" or "metrosexual" here but in Japan its very common for boys to go to salons, fuss over their cloths, and even wear foundation to hide imperfections.

I think if everyone who complains about shoujo manga took sometime to study Japanese culture would at least understand WHY it is that the girls are doing what they are and maybe it would bring down your stress level just a bit.

u know a lot about japan ne...mind sharing some POV's w/me? hehe

that is so true about boys, watched j-pop on discovery channel & boys over there even go to tanning booths as much as girls. i mean dude, seriously? jap-idols sometimes look cuter than their female counterparts.

yeah there's nothing wrong "if" they want to be treated like that. well its their choice for wanting to be a housewife and all. but that is so not my forte but i hope that they give value to themselves a lil more instead of taking it all in...

....clever observation...
...heck, that's what harems are for!!! maybe those manga-ka realize that what a harem needs is an über pathetic, lame main character since harems might look useless and lame if the protagonist is like wicked ass cool and they'd resemble groupies instead....

...kidding...

One stupid dumb loser pretty poor girl comes to a city of the rich and good-looking people and of all the guys out there, she will be liked by the Ultimate Sexiest Hottest (Homo-ish) guy who is stubborn and has personality issues. Every beautiful and gorgeous girl will be insecure of that shoujo heroine who has no talent but cooking and blushing.

I get impatient with useless/weak women in shoujo mangas, yes, but there are quite a few good ones with strong women if you dig around a bit:

Red River
This is about a Japanese girl who is pulled back in time to the cradle of civilization, and ends up becoming the goddess of war of the Hittite Empire. It's really good, although definitely R for sex and gore. This is my favourite manga--which is why my pic is of the main character (look, she's got a sword, yo!--Lol).
Saiunkoku Monogatari
This manga is about a woman from a poor, but prestigious noble family who becomes a member of the Imperial Court, as a court official. This is another really excellent shoujo manga.
The One (manhua)
This one's about a model with a huge attitude and a lot of spunk. It's fun. And hilarious. Make sure you're not drinking anything while reading, 'cause it will go flying.
OHSHC
I think everyone here's familiar with the plot of OHSHC.
The Wallflower
As above.
Ingènuo
This is about a girl who cross-dresses as a boy in order to become the apprentice of the photographer she most admires. It's got a lot of angst, but she's strong and doesn't handle it by crying to some guy to save her.
Midnight Secretary
This is another R-rated comic, but the female lead is no-nonsense and grounded in reality. She's a lot of fun. It's about a woman who is the secretary of a vampire. This mangaka's other works are also very good.
First Girl
This manga is about a woman who gets caught up in a coup d'etat and a struggle for power in a small South American country. It's loaded with drama and angst, but she, again, doesn't go crying to a man to be saved. This mangaka has a lot of very good works. This one is rated R, too, though, for sex and gore.

There are some others, too, like Crimson Hero, which manage to revive my pride as a strong and rather rough woman, lol.

But just like you have to sift through the shounen mangas that are loaded with gratuitous panty shots and no plot, you have to sift through the shoujo mangas with the idiotic leads. There are good mangas to be found, in pretty much any genre.

yep most shoujo mangas are like that. throw in a handsome but manipulative guy and the heroine falls for him.. the girl's character is disappointingly weak, needy and naive.
i've read so many that i from then on, i always check the genre and read the summary.
though i also observed in some shounen mangas that it's the other way around. the guy is a servant and the girl is the master.
weird!!!!
but it's a good thing that there are shoujo mangas that deviate from these kind of characters and storyline.

Yep, I'm pretty much sick of the weak willed women in shoujo.
And the plot is always the freaking same.

Shoujo: Where all men are evil, wife-beating, kidnapping, drug addicted, alcoholic nightmares.... with hearts of gold. And all women are weak, stupid, and gullible.

lol it's not just that the female leads in shoujos are weak, they are also stupid to the point where it seems like their whole life is devoted to finding a boyfriend. whenever I begin reading a manga, and many times, it begins with, "Hi, im [insert name] and im in [insert grade] in highschool! I really want to find a boyfriend"................. somewhere around those lines ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ can it be anymore stupid? lol
I just immediately drop mangas like that. They make it seem like a girl's only goal is to find a boyfriend. Oh, and in most of those shoujo mangas, when they do find that guy, he is usually COLD! and mean. oh and how can I forgot, handsome, tall, and smart wishful thinking these mangakas have......

anyways, with all this negativity, here are some shoujos that aren't so cliche and stupid

In all shoujo the main girl characters always have the same personality. It bothered me to the point where I only read horror and yaoi now.

I can see where you're coming from. Like that girl from Hot Gimmick. I really just want to smack her! But the girl from Kare Kano seemed stronger than the guy. Also, a lot of Manwha has the girls as very strong-willed. But those are just a few. A lot of Shoujo portray girls as weaklings.

I totally agree! the girls in shoujo manga's are usually really weak, it pisses me off.
