What I think about "Girls" in Shoujo Manga's...how about you?

yeah! i've recently been reading a bunch of short shoujo mangas and i'm really annoyed how they're all weak and the guy is always so dominant. that is one reason why gender benders are better since the girls are stronger. but why is it like that? all these girls are small, weak, cute and innocent. the only one where i'd say the girl is both strong and weak is in shinshi doumei cross, and i think that was better because of the "dark past" kinda deal. that looks like the only way to strengthen these girls...
and i've been noticing a lot of these stories are so similar. like arranged marriages that end up working out ("magically"), gender benders in music groups (omg so many!), falling in love with step-siblings/family members, harems where all the guys end up falling in love with the one girl... the list goes on
and in all of these (except gender-benders), the girls are WEAK!
we need more girl power!

shoujo manga gets really annoying, its usually ALWAYS the same plot&also if you havent noticed most of the heroines in shoujo manga fall in love at first sight usually with a guy they've never even talked to before

its weird&so unrealistic..i mean its not possible to see a guy you've never even seen before&decide that he's gonna be the man you marry

AGEN SO UNREALISTIC -__-'

men like the feeling of being the protector, defender of women, so it would only be natural to include that (though a little romanticized, to be sure) in mangas targeted at boys.

Hot Gimmick was the one that took the cake for me. The male that the really weak and helpless shoujo picked was just down right abusive. The ending literally made me want to puke. WTF! Ryoki= domineering jerk of the year in spite of his hidden good deeds. Whats the deal with the "slave' gf, and she STILL accepts it!?!?!? Believe it or not there is a Ryoki fan club here on CR.

Skip Beat's heroine is much more likable in my book (I think that is the only shoujo manga I'm reading right now) Got stepped on, by the man she doted over and, stepped up to take his butt down. *woot!*

Wallflower's heroine was cool, she's in the state she's in because she was easily hurt, but she doesn't waiver with her feelings when she wants to express something or do what she wants to do.

In a way, the reason why shoujo heroines remain the way they are today is soley fault of Japanese male dominated society. Women are treated as objects of lust and desire (a male politician this year had the nads to even say women were "birth-giving machines") And the ideal woman is supposed to be meek, weak, and submissive for a man to like her.

I have read lots of Shoujo Manga's and noticed that girls are portrayed as weak, vulnerable and somehow lacks even common sense (Stupid!). I really hate it, they treat girls like objects, like a doll a guy can use and abuse whichever way they want and the girls still end up falling for them vice versa. But Im getting so tired of this kind of plot.

Im hoping that it would change, although there are a few shoujo's with strong heroines you can only count them within your hands fingers. Im just saying that in some scenes they could've either fought back, call for help, find an ally or reject guys but no, they just lay there like a dying fish out of water. We can do more than that right girls?

I dont want to offend any readers who enjoy reading this kind of plot. Dont get me wrong, I still read Shoujo's till now...with a little sour face and disappointment. So, my fellow ladies what do you think? Im sure the guys enjoy parts where they overpower helpless girls...its their nature. lol JK Girl power!

prolly, it's because no girl can sympathize with 'strong, neat and beautiful' girl. and if she can do daily life perfect, isn't it boring? though I understand what you said.

i know.even though i rarely read shoujo(shounen ai/yaoi is my love) but they potrayed the girl as a weakling a crybaby who need the hero to rescue them everytime.i don't read shinjo mayu works but i definitely think shinju manga portrayed all her main character as a weakling, crybaby and a girl that can do anything.read the review from mangaupdates so i definitely won't touch her works esp her works is mostly contain smut.

i would actually admire a heroine that can do everything, strong, brave and not a crybaby that'll only wait for their hero to rescue them.because i'm weak and useless myself so i don't want to read about a weak girl in the manga.

Yeah me too. I'd like to find the courage and confidence in the manga's I read. Cuz truthfully, manga stories are all about life! Why read something that will make me/you feel bad about being a girl? Although it has some lesson in it... "Dont copy those weaklings! Do the opposite" maybe thats the only good it has. And not to mention it always ends in a perfect ending scenario...too perfect to be true.

Honestly, ya think guys "these days" will always come rescue you in a white horse? Its called "wishful thinking" nowadays!". You'll prolly be all torn up till he comes and says... "Sorry honey, got stuck playing DOTA..." (Ugh! thats my friends BF after we waited for him for almost 2hrs.)

well japanese girls are for the most part (not all, just a lot) are pushovers just like your hated heroines. There was a class of japanese kids that come to my school on an exchange and all the girls were as quite and meek as you could possibly get... youd ask them a question and theyd just stare at the ground and mumble their answer. Though im proud to say that 1 of the girls by the end of the their trip had become outgoing

umm...being a pushover isn't the same thing as being quiet. Some cultures like Japan are ok w/ shy ppl (like they don't think it's weird), just because the majority of the ppl at the exchange..or in this world are outgoing doesn't make being shy wrong. The thing abt shoujo heroines is that some ppl (manga readers in general) in Japan think it's cute for girls to act like that (although I don't like it), so that's why so many artists design them like that. THough you can tell there's an audience who doesn't like that type of heroine, so there are stories w/ stronger heroines. Another possible reason is that the artist needs to create one of those awww moments or knight-in-shining-armor situations, so she needs the girl to be defenseless in order for the male protagonist to save her.

A wonderfully on-spot description: "they just lay there like a dying fish out of water".

I agree that a majority of the shoujo heroines are weak and spineless. When i first started reading manga around 15, I didn't mind reading about these shoujo heroines. I was a bit weak and could identify a bit with the and besides, the guys were hot. And isn't it so romantic that he rescued her? And isn't Miaka and Tamahome such a cute couple? etc. etc. But after hearing about the manga Skip Beat and Tokyo Crazy paradise and reading Apparu Jipangu, I started to crave stronger heroines. By the time I was in college, i didn't have much tolerance for girls whose hearts goes "doki doki" every other page and who can only cry all the time. Especially hateful are those girls who let guys molest her. Geez, fight back! fight dirty!! use your nails and teeth!

After much research and summary reading -I wouldn't say that you can count the number of strong-heroine shoujo manga with two hands. I know of at least 30. But I wish it wouldn't be so time-consuming to find a strong-heroine manga. I don't think this is a problem with only shoujo manga but with manga in general. I notice in shounen manga- girls are often depicted as having ridiculously large boobs and there is usually a lot of cleavage and panty-shots. Though they aren't as weak as shoujo heroines, they're still depicted as being a bit air-headed.

lol this is soo true! a lot of shojos have really weak girls and thats why i really hate most of the mangas that i read and try to pick ones where the girl has to face a harder challenge (like maybe deal with some isssues or whatever). plus i find that the girls that are usually never thinking about being romanced are usually the ones that are tougher and stronger. i like hana yori dango cuz the girl is tougher and braver than guys in her school. ouran is good too, and defintely koukou debut cuz the girl is stronger than a lot of the guys but is still a wonderful person!

Haha so reminds of my time too...and hot guys are my weakness in shoujo's too. Im guilty for reading them now, but still annoyed at the heroines.

Hmm...now that u've metioned it, I guess they are depicted like that. Well, for the male audience I suppose. But even so they are a bit air headed, they can still kick some ass in those skimpy skirts and panties! (^o^)
