original topic starter Pimp john paul.....

why do underground fans hate mainstream rappers?

We don't all hate radio & tv shit.............it's just the shit currently that's on radio & tv that we all hate right now. Back in the late 80s, all of the 90s and the early 2000s, shit on the radio & tv had great quality in terms of lyricism and mass appeal. In the current age, the stuff on radio & tv is nothing but mass appeal that is being influenced by BULLSHIT.

As for the underground shit, I'm 50/50 on that shit. Most of the time, they've obviously maintained some consistency in terms of lyricism, the ability to send a message across, and the ability to create an appeal. At the same time, there are underground emcees these days (such as Uncle Murda) that make absolute bullshit just so they can get their names out there.

yep i agree wit big j

im not keen on the whole underground scene, but i do like alot of rappers that are off the mainstream radar, like Papoose & Styles P, but they fit into that era of rappers forementioned so... idk? The south had underground i guess, but other than ppl like Z-Ro & Trae, i think most of them are bullshit.... remember there was a point in time where Mike Jones, Lil Flip & Paul Wall were underground. AND NO LIE, they were hot, especailly Paul Wall, but now......

Well it's called conform. When one is underground, one is hungry to be heard. The artist is going to give it all in their lyrics, beat and such. When one makes it to the mainstream, artists get tired and get confortable after making it nowadays so, that it messes with their senses when it times to get back to work on a new album.

I'll listen to all of it. It's just that I find myself enjoying more songs from underground artists than the mainstream songs. But, I don't hate mainstream at all. It serves it's purpose, it's catchy as hell, gets people to dance, and a decent portion of the songs do have a positive message and intelligent lyrics.

Imagine if the only music they played in clubs was underground Hip-Hop =P.

Good point. lol

Which is why it's a good thing that we have both.

I personally prefer to listen to underground hip hop more than mainstream, but I also like to breakdance & pop. Underground doesn't always provide that dancing vibe.

I'm not really into dance hip-hop, which seems to be all that's on the radio today anyway, and since all of it is about the same, there really isn't any musical value to it. Singing about fucking doesn't really take too much skill anyways, right?

Underground rappers at least do a decent job of keeping true to rap roots, which is why they appeal more to hip-hop heads. I think rapping is pretty hard thing to do, and since there aren't really any popular lyricists (aside from MAYBE Weezy), the underground just sounds better.

Not to hate on the mainstream, but a good number of tracks that's put up is candy coated cotton talk. It appeals to the masses and is catchy. But for some good quality music, the underground is the place to be. Immortal Tech, Pharycide, 2Mex, Crown City Rockers, Sound Providers, The Procussions, Giant Panda, Braille, Zion-I: There is so much under-appreciated and under-rated talent that many people just don't get to listen to. To strike a balance of both though, now thats a beautiful thing.

You jus gotta find the right balance some mainstream like soulja boy is jus ringtone music, sounds like a nursery rhyme but i suppose people such as chamillionaire are mainstream and he is a gifted lyricist and Wayne is a real entertaining rapper like him or not, but then underground you get some shit but then you get real good stuff like AOTP, Immortal Technique only bad thing immortal tech is breath control is horrible, Jedi Mind Tricks, Necro, and more is sick as fuck. But then fuck it stick with some old school.

Jedi Mind Tricks have some crazy instrumentals. When my friend introduced me to their music I was like, "Jedi Mind Trick.....What the fuck?!?!" After I heard it I thought it was tight. Here's a name no one mentioned for underground rap. Jin is sick yo. His freestyles on Freestyle Friday were ill. And don't give me that shit "you only like him because he's Asian." Hell no. If you actually listen to his lyrics they are pretty good and he's one of those rappers that isn't always rapping about guns, sex, violence, and drugs which is what you here most days. His stuff his personal experiences and I like that. Also, Atmosphere is not bad either. Lyrically Slug has good shit.
