Alot of people have said it already, but I'll recommend Skip Beat!, just to reinforce. Kyoko is one tough girl.

goong- kinda disapointed at this, i expected her to be stronger. but she breaks down easilly...
red lion- great! so funny! great girl for a cliche shoujo- but the heroince just lacks a lil glamour...
shinshi doumei cross- just checked it out, the art is good!Im'a read it!
vampire knight- ugh...not again
my girl- i found two titles, seems interesting
blooming- i like the summary so far
never give up- so cool!but a little cliche with the gender bender thang...

gee...am'I gonna be busy these days...*sigh tnx for the titles.

whoa so many great suggestions here. Some have already been mentioned but i thought to mention them again to show how many people love those manga.

Skip Beat- the ultimate strong-heroine manga!
Tokyo Crazy Paradise- a girl who can fight and use her chain-weapon against guns. IMO, she's like the terminator- only a girl and human.
Crimson Hero
Perfect GIrl Evolution [Wallflower]- a girl who looks like the girl from "The Ring". She really goth, loves gore, and nosebleeds when seeing beautiful people.
W-Juliet
Ouran High School Host Club- the unflappable Haruhi. Very much the chill, "whatever" type. Totally unconscious of herself and her gender. one of
Beauty Pop- also the chill, "whatever" type. love her!!
Devil and Her Love Song
Special A
Tomodachi
Hush- a girl who looks like a boy and a boy who cross-dresses as a girl. she isn't as strong as other heroines but she's not a typical shoujo heroine either.
The kidnapping of Minja Jo's bf
School X Fight
koukou debut
Bring it on (Blooming)
Ueda Rinko's works- who can resist ninja girls?!
Hwang MiRi's works- she's the author of Hot Blooded Women. All her other works feature similar heroines who are strong.
Chiro Star Project- she seems weak and annoying at first- but it looks like she will become stronger. she's already gaining a guy's physique since she is debuting in the entertainment industry as a guy singer.
Cynical Orange
Love Pop- she USED to be strong when she was a kid. she used to beat up the main guy of the story when they were kids..only 2 chapters have been scanslated so I don't know if she still retains her skills even though the main guy is taller than her now and is able to bully her.
Love SOS
Lover Discovery
Red Lion
Nodame Cantabile- i don't think she's strong in the conventional sense but she is unusual (all the characters consider her weird) and she doesn't go into those internal mumblings most shoujo heroines undergo. she's also a piano genius with ambition.
Shiwamong
Girl Got Game
WA!- always love a girl with ambition
Faster than a kiss

and in defense of it started with a kiss earlier- Kotoko is hard to describe. She is like other shoujo heroines in that she's in love with a jerk who keeps on rejecting her. But she is unlike them in her confidence and honesty. Too many girls in shoujo manga worry too much and obsess like crazy over little mistakes and hurts. Kotoko doesn't obsess like crazy but persists. the TW drama moved too slow and Ariel's portrayal makes Kotoko out to be too clumsy without the strength of her spirit. but then this manga isn't for anyone.

for strong women, i usually go with Korean Shoujo Manhwa. I find that there are more physically strong women in them than in regular Japanese Manga and fights are more ruthless and violent. Still manga with strong heroines are hard to find. Sometimes I will just settle for any manga that doesn't have the girl being attacked and needing rescue from the main guy.

yeah, me thinks also. Im not in any position to compare but damn! some manwha's are eye-candies! and they have this girl-gangs in schools with boss's and stuff. its fucking awesome!i just red this recently and fell in love with the story line!

Park jun is the heroine in this story and she's the typical cold, less smile, strong heroine who lacks the intuition when it comes to love. Its like a combination of Haruhi (in Ouran) & Maria (Akuma to Love SOng). two of my most favorite manga characters!

_THE KIDNAPPING OF MINJA JO'S BOYFRIEND_

Minja jo is the jjang of The Blue Birds and Park jun, jjang of The Black butterflies have always been rivals since way back. So Park jun decides to kidnap the said boyfriend of Minja jo but took the wrong guy. What happens with this mistaken captive and Park jun? And what is Minja jo's true reason for tormenting Park jun in her relationships?

I just checked it out, and that one actually looks pretty good. Although it really is to bad that it's a one-shot. I always am left wanting to know more about the story from those... Oh well, can't wait until I have a chance to read it

Yeah it IS pretty short...but im fine with oneshots rather than the longshots which will have you pulling your hair out anticipating for the next chapter, with their twists and turns, ups and downs, villainous traitorous characters then have the ending until you have a grandchild already ne?

Kare Kano

There are few stronger females than Yukino. She has her weak moments, but she always bounces back.

Actually i think,Itazura Na Kiss(It started with a kiss) has a really strong heroine,I mean how many girls can go around facing rejection and get all optimistic about winning that Ice-prince genius guy's heart.
You have to be like REALLY strong...mentally of cosh...

I love Itazura Na Kiss too!..but not bcuz the main girl's strong. I don't think Kotoko's mentally strong at all x] But I do love this manga because I love mangas w/ impossible couples. Genius Naoki and stupid Kotoko are one of my fav. pairs xD I think Kotoko's best trait should be tenacious, rather.

Tenshi na Konamaiki: Megumi is definately a female character I would consider strong, brave and totally awesome. Yeah, she's got gender issues, but when you get past all that she is a girl through and through. It's amusing to see how she carries herself throughout the series.

Hana Yori Dango: Makino is another lead female character that I love. She stands up for herself and doesn't take crap from anyone. She has her awkwardness when it comes to guys and relationships, but that's what makes her character seem all the more relateable.

Ouran High School Host Club: Haruhi is great because she is the complete opposite of most girls. None of that falling all over herself for pretty guys and no shallow behavior. She just doesn't care, but she's smart and has a good head on her shoulders. She's a refreshing change.
