Well, I saw Graphics vs. Gameplay, but I didn't see one for story. If there was, I apologize.

But I'm curious what peoples' views are. I've been having this discussion with a friend of mine for a while now, about whether the game play is more important, or whether the game's story is more important, and we can't seem to come to any sort of agreement.

I say that it's more important for a game to be interesting to play. A good story is nice if it's there, but for me, I want something interesting. A cool job class system. (Final Fantasy Tactics) Crafting of weapons. (Most MMO's) An AI that can move and flank. (F.E.A.R., among others)) Something worth collecting. (Pokemon, among others) A new take on the genre. (Again, F.E.A.R., among others) A weapon that turns things upside down. (Half-Life 2). Or even just a crappy game that'll let you laugh when you're playing it. (Earth Defense Force 2017). In other words, I just want to have FUN when I'm playing. (Admittedly, most of my examples have decent stories, but there are other examples.)

My friend, on the other hand, is of the opinion that story is key. He says that even crappy games are worth playing if the story is good. I admit, I used to share his philosophy, too. But lately, I've been asking myself, why? He says that people will play through a crappy game if the story is good enough, because the story is deep and pulls you into it.

But back in the old days, back in say, the NES and Atari era, the games didn't have much story. At least, not in the game itself Some of them had detailed stories in the manual.. You didn't have major cutscenes with pre-rendered cinema. Your cutscene was "The Princess is in Another Castle." But why did we play Mario, and Zelda, and Sonic and Space Invaders? Because they were fun.

The reason I chose to ask this is that I started playing Shadow of the Colossus, which my friend said was sooo good. And I got so bored that I returned it. Great story, but it just isn't fun. So, I want to know... Which is MORE important? Story, or Gameplay?

If you say story is more important, why? Is there a point where you'll sacrifice story for gameplay?
If you say gameplay is more important, why? is there a point at which you'll sacrifice gameplay for story?

tough call, either could make or break a videogame, the way I see it....

a story is necissary, because they can pull you in and keep you from droping the controller just to see what happens next, or make you lose sleep wondering what will happen, and so in this sence games can be like interactive books, if you have a good enough story you can tollerate any sort of crappy gameplay, good examples of this is FF7, if you play it today the gameplay is mediocre at best but the story is absolutely phenominal, and I still play it just to go through the story again.....

gameplay is also necissary, because it just makes the game fun to play, a good example of this is mario, the story to it is, mario is a plummer who got sucked into a kingdom made of mushrooms to go save a princess, however despite the fact that the overall plot was most likely made up by some one on drugs, there's just somthing really fun about crushing kupas under a plummer's body weight, and you cant argue with the results either.....

however it is best to combine the two you get somthing like this.....

however should you lack both you get this.....

but in the end I have to say story, only because I prefer a good story over all else

I prefer FF8's story, but yes, I do take your point. I musta played 100 hours on that game, just to get through to find out how it would all end. However, I was sort of expecting someone to pull out a Final Fantasy. But back in the day, when it came out, it was considered highly innovative and unusual. (Heck, myself and five friends picked it up when it came out and spent the day playing as a group.) And yes, much of the fun of watching was the story. But I remember we were all impressed with the idea of materia, too.

Whoa, that brings back memories. Yeah, I dunno that I could call that a "good" game. But man, the memories!

Well, I suppose that makes sense. Like I said, I've sacrificed game for story, too. I still think I prefer gameplay, but you make a great case.

BTW, is MGS 3 that good?

gameplay i think is more important because if a game has a crap-ass story but good game play, it would still be somewhat fun
mind you though that it wouldn't be as fun as a game with both good gameplay and a killer story, but still, gameplay kinda rules it out

MSG 3 is okay, but I didn't like it for some reason.

Anyway, getting on topic~

I would probably say that I would prefer gameplay over story. Its kind of asking what would you rather have in a girl/ guy? Personality or looks? If you choose personality you'll have a fun time with her, laugh, cry, whatever. If you choose looks, she'll be smoking hot.. and thats about it. You'll be lucky if you find someone with both.

But in games, I prefer gameplay. Due to the fact that I want something that'll keep me entertained. I wouldn't really care about the story since I won't be paying attention to it. I rarely do.. I'll be gawking the x-bow (GoW), dinosaurs (Turok) and so much more.

But in reality you still need a good story for a game to actually keeps you wanting more, and same with gameplay. Thats why we have..

I'm not sure, but If I had to choose one It'd probably be gameplay. For me, great gameplay can override a somewhat bad story.
