Has anyone read this manga? It's by the godfather of all mangas and animes...Osamu Tezuka. It ran in the 1970s but unlike astro boy (one of his other manga), this one I don't think got adapted into anime.
I'm currently reading volume 1 and Buddha is about to be born in India. Although the art is childish, it has some serious themes presented in it. Death, torture, caste system (which still have some remains in India even today) etc...

Overview of the series:

The manga Buddha was drawn by Osamu Tezuka and is Tezuka's unique interpretation of the life of Gautama Buddha. The critically acclaimed series is often referred to as a gritty, even sexy, portrayal of the holy man's life.

In ancient India, the lives of many people are plagued by drought, famine, constant warfare and injustices in the caste system. The intertwining lives of many unhappy souls are drawn together by the birth of the young prince Siddhartha, who embarks on a spiritual journey, becomes Gautama Buddha, "the Enlightened One," and attempts to bring about a spiritual rebirth of the people in this desperate age.

Pictures here.

I really think this manga is worth a reading. There are 8 volumes of this awesome manga series.
