Or maybe they respect my experience. I know when I have met someone who has trained in martial arts since before I was born, I have great respect.

I started martial arts a year before you were born. It'll be 19 years of martial arts experience in August.

Here's a place to discuss Blade-Wielding Warriors in Anime and History. Ask questions, have friendly debates, or just put in your 2cents.

To provide for a decent discussion, I have to ask that aside from questions, all entries should be atleast a small paragraph long.

Here's to get things going;

My general question is; Why ninja? They are often found to be blade-wielding warriors when in fact they are not warriors at all.

I must state that there's a mighty contrast between Fantasy and Reality here.

Fantasy ninja can jump 10 feet in the air, teleport around, can walk on water and cast spells, carry straight single edged swords and can throw kunai and shuriken like they are knives. Fantasy ninjutsu consists of magic and assassin arts.

Real ninja are spies. Not assassins. They are not mystical nor do they carry weapons at all. In reality kunai are trowels, not knives (they have no sharp point nor blade) and shuriken are either flat square pieces of scrap metal which aren't sharp and not used to kill or are sharply pointed darts and are used by Samurai, not ninja. Real ninjutsu consists of espionage, disguise, and infiltration arts and contains no martial (fighting) arts at all. Real ninja or more properly "Shinobi no mono" are usually peasants who are employed to listen in on what someone says. In the sengoku jidai, schools teaching arts such as Disguise making, Infiltration, Acting and Listening techniques sprung up institutionalizing ninjutsu. These Sengoku-jidai ninja more so dressed as servants or old monks to walk about unnoticed in the open rather than the black Sho-Kosugi "Ninja Outfit" which was actually a puppeteer's costume which was far more rarely used.

people who have not studied martial arts would not have any knowledge of that but i applaude your effort people dont know the true story behind the ninja ,samurai or even the relationship between kara te do and kung-fu (kenpo in japan) but they should simply watching anime will not teach you about history

Nope. That's what anime and movies portray though, so it's understandable that so many believe it as truth.

Shikaku were assassins. Their art was crude and they relied on surprise in the shape of a low to the ground battokiri or just running at someone with a blade or dagger. They did not have access to any proper bujutsu either which is due given their crude and often clumsy method of assassination

Ninja were only spies. The jintonpo, a historic record of the arts of the shinobi no mono [ninjutsu] lists no martial arts in it's curriculum thus verifying the proof that shinobi no mono [or 'ninja'] were not warriors.

Further proof exists in the fact that most bujutsu [japanese martial arts] were exclusive to the bushi class [samurai] and strict records were kept, each student bound by a keppan or blood contract and any breach of said contract was a fatal flaw.

The shinobigatana or 'ninjato' is also a purely fictional device as there is no evidence of it's existence and no mention of it until the modern era.

Kunai were not blades, as popularly portrayed, but rather trowels. They were blunt and were not weapons at all.
It's preposterous to declare such instruments "knives" as they are often marketed and they cannot be properly construed as weapons either as that is not their design and in use they would be quite ineffective.

I hope this info helps.
