Japanese rock star Gackt will co-star along with Josh Hartnett and Demi Moore in the Hollywood produced action film “Bunraku.” Gackt will play a samurai named Yoshi, a companion to Hartnett’s drifter on a quest for revenge character.

The film, written and directed by Guy Moshe, draws its title and inspiration from traditional Japanese puppet theater, but is reportedly also influenced by origami, video games, and other sources.

This is Gackt’s first acting role since his appearance in the 2003 Japanese action/sci-fi film “Moon Child.”

Shooting on Bunraku began in Romania earlier this month. The movie is scheduled for American theatrical release next year.

It's been only rumor up until now, but now we can confirm that Gackt will be in an upcoming Guy Moshe movie, "Bunraku," which will star Josh Hartnett and Demi Moore. According to IMDB, Gackt will be playing a samurai named "Yoshi," who will be the partner of Hartnett's character.

Bunraku puppetry is traditional to Japan and is the pre-cursor to kabuki theatre. The large puppets require three people to manipulate. It's not clear exactly how this will inspire the movie or the plot just yet. Initial press about the movie calls it a "Japanese spaghetti western." It's slated to be released sometime in 2009.

Keep checking back this post for more info as it becomes available. I will post links to stories and interviews about the film right here.

MTV interview with Josh Hartnett about the film:
http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/artic...23/story.jhtml

Quote:
The flick will mix CGI and practical sets to create the world of "Bunraku," a style of Japanese storytelling that uses 4-foot-tall puppets with highly detailed heads, each operated by several puppeteers who blend into the background wearing black robes and hoods.

"Some of the scenes are gonna be more Michel Gondry-like I guess," he said, citing some degree of influence by the "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" visionary. "But a lot of them will be green screen as well."

"[The script] has a lot of fight sequences in it, but it's more about these crazy characters," Hartnett explained. "Like my character, he's a gypsy and he's coming into town and he's got something to prove — and no one really knows what he's about."

During his attempts to describe the defiantly indescribable look of "Bunraku," Hartnett kept hearkening back to that groundbreaking Frank Miller film he lent himself to several years ago. "It's not fantasy. Well, I mean, it's fantasy in that it's not reality, but it's not 'Narnia,' " he said. "It's a film that, I don't know how to stick it into a genre, but I would say it's more a film like 'Sin City' than anything else."
