Burglary? Possibly the only chance you'll get to get the drop on them, but unless you're going with the intent to kill someone, which they may also have (and if there's more of them than you then, again, we're in superhero territory), then the chances are you're going to end up dead, which would have been avoided if you'd stayed upstairs and called the police instead of rushing downstairs into the belly of the beast with a handgun. If you're going to say that they'd come upstairs and kill you after they were done, then you're a fool, burglars typically tried to avoid confrontation with residents, they might run if you go in all guns blazing, then again, they might panic and fire back, either way, it'd be avoided by just calling the police

this is the part I have the most problem with. You don't know why this guy broke into your house is he there just to rob you is he insane and can be there to murder you and your family? Are you honestly willing to gamble with your love ones lives in hope that this guy is just a harmless robber and will leave when he is done? What id you live in a rural area and it could take the law 15 minutes to a half hour to get to you are you willing to wait? This time try answering with a little less condescending snark I wasn't rude to you there is no need to be rude me

Entirely right about the criminals having illegal access, Octavia, but by making them readily available you don't just give them to people with the right connections, you give them to anyone with a mental disorder, anyone with any criminal inclinations, and you get crimes that you would not have without them, yes, there will always be murderers, rapists, muggers, etc, but you wouldn't have school shootings.

By your logic, what would the problem be with everyone having access to an RPG? People with the right connections can get them, so let's extend that allowance to everyone.

As for cigarettes and alcohol, I'm quite certain you'll find that you can't mug someone with a pint of beer or a pack of cigarettes, much less end their life as the flick of a switch with them.

Now, contrary to my argument, I'm not actually in favour of gun control, they're too widespread nowadays in America for them to be controlled in any plausible fashion, and denying them to one part of the population, the law abiding citizen, while they're already as widely distributed as they are is beyond madness.

Rather, my point is an idealistic one, they are not a magic wand that protects the innocent, and again, unless you're a psychopath who has no problem with taking a human life, and you go around gun in hand pointing it around every corner, you're not going to be in a position to use it against a criminal who has it drawn and ready to threaten someone with.

Smoking, drinking, drug use, gambling, etc, these are choices that impact the person directly, they can have knock-on effects, yes, but so can romance, so can a stressful job, so can getting fired, this is different to putting a firework in someone elses hand and lighting it.

Fair point, and I apologise, I'm too used to eejits putting words in my mouth, sorry for snapping.

Personally, I wouldn't be willing to wait, I'd be crouching in the dark at the top of the stairs waiting for that unfortunate individual to pop his head above the bannister so I could smack him round the chops with a cricket bat, I wouldn't charge into a situation that could get me killed under the impression that this person is obvlivious to his surroundings.

I don't have night vision, I don't have a gun, even if he does I have the element of surprise, and by not floundering around in the dark, I maintain that and protect myself and my family.

Possessions can be reacquired, my partner cannot reacquire another of me, my life, and the lives of my family, mean more to me than anything else.

And besides which, having a gun would change nothing in that scenario, going downstairs blind would still be suicide compared to lying in wait, if all else fails, shout that you've called the police and he's likely to scarper. Situation resolved.

the main reason people own guns is to protect themselves from their own government, invaders and criminals. saying that someone cant own a gun is like saying "you cant use a knife in self defense" or even a punch for that matter. however i can see some people say that guns are dangerous weapons and they kill people more than anything else, BUT guns themselves are harmless, the man wielding it is. to get a gun you must prove your responsible enough by the government, but the government cant really watch your every move so not alot of people know how to take care of a gun properly or even shoot one for that matter.

my point being is no matter what you do people are going to be cruel to each other every day, people die every day , not only from guns but things like lead pipes, knives, swords, sticks, baseball bats and on and on and on. so trying to find a way to take guns away is foolish because it would be a means of making people defenseless and i would not make a difference at all.

the only thing i can see happening in the case that guns are made illegal, is that the black market will supply criminals with them and would put alot of people in danger.

The world succumbs to the childlike mindset of when denied something, they will want it all the more, and will make a harder effort to acquire it. The world is a cruel place, if guns are banned, people will find another means to harm another. The question is, what personal reason do you have to support/reject firearms?

A big YES! Criminals will be criminals regardless of what weapons they have. Just look at the deaths in prison. You can't tell me that making guns illegal will suddenly prevent tons of crime. Unstable people will still find a way to make an impact.

Yes people should be.

I'd just be more afraid to go outside. You know how idiotic SOME people can be with guns but they are who ruin it for the responsible people.

Take firearms away from the ownership of military and police forces and they will use something else.

Take firearms away from the ownership of civilians and they will still find ways to get them.

Yes, every citizen should also be taught how to use one, image your government turns against you (Well it kind of always is but most of the people are too ignorant to see it) if you have a gun + some basic training you can stand up for yourself and you may have a fighting chance if the government uses the army to crush you.

Also if you want to make guns illegal then I can only say one thing, The Hidden Wiki. Even children can get guns ordered to their front doors that way and it only takes 1 minute to get onto the site.
