Good day & kindly bear with me with this fictionalized story of what took place during the aftermath in Kyoto from Okina's point of view. Some of the facts within the story might be off though so I apologize in advance..

Drearily,Okina looks up into the sky as he tries to move his tired & injured form from the tatami floor from which he sat. A lot of hustle & bustle is presently going on at the Aoiya due to the repairs that required immediate attention that was caused by Shishio's cohorts when they attacked. Much has happened since then, & Okina is thinking upon what the future has in store. "My body is racked with so much pain", he disgustedly thought to himself. Not too long ago, yet seemingly more than that, he battled with the new leader of The Oniwaban Group; his own successor: Aoshi Shinomori, and though he gave it his all, Okina had lost. True he did not wish this to be the end result, but he knew deep in his heart that Aoshi would defeat him. "I fought him the best way I could have, & yet part of me held back from completely annihilating him. Originally, I had planned on dying as we fought, but I wasn't planning on dying alone".

With that thought, he takes out one of his steel tonfas & mused, "though this weapon is of the same make as the others, this one I had created secretly with one minute exception, for within the end of the tonfa is a false frontcap that allows poison to be stored within the cavity, & all one has to do is to just slightly nick the intended victim to deliver the lethal dose. Being a skilled ninja, poison has been an arsenal of ours for quite some time". However, though extremely deadly the poison might be, Okina never liked the idea of exposing Misao to any of the makings of the toxin; thus she was kept unaware of it.

As some might have overlooked, Okina was originally The Oniwaban Group's leader before Aoshi took over the duties of leadership. He has overseen much of the group's success, as well as its failures. Nevertheless, he was supportive when Aoshi did become their leader, because one thought prevented him from voicing his disagreement & so he stilled his tongue: Misao....

As Misao grew into a beautiful young girl, care for her had been entrusted to the remaining members of the clan, including Okina himself. The caring for the youngster had angered Okina at first, & he argued with Aoshi about it. "How is it that you decide to disrespect me this way Aoshi?" asked Okina on one of their unknown disputes. "Why must I, along with some members of this clan be made into babysitters for this youth?" Unfortunately, due to Aoshi's stubborness, & pathetic self goal of achieving the status of being "the best" , he left with part of the clan & all that was left was Okina & a few others to care for Misao. This Okina did not wish to do, "we're warrior ninjas not babysitters!", he would often be overheard muttering to himself. But eventually, Okina began to have Misao train as any ninja in the clan would be, but slightly harder. Her skills became commendable, & her body strong. But in her heart, she always longed for Aoshi's return to the Aoiya & to her. Okina knew of this, but said nothing, because as time went by, his care & love for Misao grew within each passing day. Okina finally allowed himself to allow his caring for the child to grow until they both loved each other as blood relatives would. This occured so naturally that no one even noticed, not even themselves.

Then one day, Aoshi finally returned to Kyoto and to the Aoiya. But the man who returned was not the same man that left. This Aoshi was one confused individual, full of rage, pity & doubt."This is the leader to whom we must obey?" Okina questioningly asked himself. "This being is no longer Aoshi Shinomori, but a demon that must be dealt with & destroyed, for the safety of the clan!" So despite Misao's pleadings, & also knowing his death would be inevitable if they confronted each other, Okina prepared to give Aoshi the deadly poison he had made. The same poison that will leave no trace or mark whatsoever, so Misao & the others will not have a clue as to what happened. All they will assume is that both Aoshi & Okina perished during their battle with each other.

As their fighting went on, the thought of Misao so distraught & saddened by Aoshi's demise prevented Okina from delivering the deadly poison to its intended victim. Instead Okina held back & battled Aoshi with but a single memory to take with him to his grave. "My dearest Misao, how I wish I could see you grow into your full potential..." & with that, Okina was defeated & his vision goes black....

Shaken from his reverie, Okina once again attempts to rise from the tatami floor. "My oh my, this really is a big pain in the ass!!", he thought to himself. Then he feels strong yet gentle hands hold him up & assists him to get upright. "Gramps, you silly old man" says Misao. "Here let me help you, you know Megumi-chan said not to overexert yourself since your bruises & cuts aren't fully healed yet." As he gets up with assistance from Misao, Okina turns his head slightly away from his grand daughter, wipes away a tear, and smiles.......
