great choice. truely an amazing anime. anime to watch for anyone who's into a more pessimestic view of life, but always has it's sunshine in there too.

i'm sorry, but Spiral makes Death Note look like a joke. I love Death Note, but Spiral sticks to the mind games the entire time. The religous references are pretty intense and make you think. Evangelion isn't really that great of an anime, the writer began losing sight of what he was trying to accomplish. He went from normal to suicidal through the course of the anime. and I believe his state-of-mind was not quite there. Something bout the anime really dissappointed me, i'm sorry for all of you who like the anime, but i'm def not a fan of it.

what do you think of xxxholic? I love the way they present the involvement of fate. "there's no such thing as coincidence in this world, everything is inevitable"

unfortunately i haven't been able to see xxxholic yet, but i def will since i've been hearing alot of talk about it on here. but that quote sounds very much like something that would be said in spiral, except the main character is more along the lines of fighting fate and that you make your own future. i'll let you know bout xxxholic after I have watched it

Sometimes I like the thinking . However , there are times when it`s annoying because I don`t know
why I`m thinking about it or I don`t know the answers to the questions I`m asking myself . =/

thats the fun part until you realize you can't figure this out because your to lazy like me or you its just too complicated like higurashi no naku koro ni i kept think i could put all the pieces together and figure it out but either i was too lazy too figure it out or it was impossible but i never would have guessed the ending

Umm....Higurashi and Lain kinda fit the description.

finally someone who has seen Serial Experiments Lain i myself didn't get that one or I think i did but then there were little things i didn't get like what happened to her sister and what was up with the episode where she goes in the internet or something and talks to the old guy about kids or something in the end it was just another EVA she can control everything somehow

waste of time?? why do you say that?? Higurashi also makes you think, I for one say that Higurashi is better than Death Note

Meh nvm..Serial Experiments Lain is better than the two them anyway, but still Higurashi is my fav

it might get a little boring if its completely introspective.

I think many animes cited so far arent really in that category though.

Like GITS has a lot of intellectual substances and philosophical inputs, as well as psychological twists, that I think are worthy of great praise, but they are not really introspective per se. Most of the concepts revolve around behaviors of human beings or individuals in relation with each other when put in certain conditions or systems, like a Stand Alone Complex event happening. Perhaps the only episode/s I can remember that there was a fair amount of psychological introspect involved for a character was after the Section 9 got "disbanded" and Togusa found himself in quite a depression, questioning his own self worth post-Section 9.

Similarly, Monster is a notable psychological thriller, but then again the questions are more on behaviors of many individuals in relation to each other and not a single person reflecting on his own life (as with Flowers For Algernon), although maybe it can be considered as a psychological introspect in a way that many a times, the show somewhat questions the behavior of humanity as a singular, general entity.

I must say, just like others here, Serial Experiments Lain.
I also recommend Akira but only the manga —the film is not psychological or introspective at all and, «personally», it sucks if you has read the comic.

I like Monster, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and the first part of Death Note, however I think none of them match with this thread.
