Let's start with definitions. Both of them are taken from Wikipedia.

IQ : An intelligence quotient or IQ is a score derived from one of several different standardized tests attempting to measure intelligence. IQ tests are used as predictors of educational achievement. People with low IQ scores are sometimes placed in special-needs education.

In my interpretation, it means your ability to accept, apply, interpret accurately concepts especially those of Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and whatever your education system teaches.

EQ : Emotional Intelligence (EI), often measured as an Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EQ), describes an ability, capacity, or skill to perceive, assess, and manage the emotions of one's self, of others, and of groups. As a relatively new area of psychological research, the definition of EI is constantly changing.

In my interpretation, it's about how humans behave towards other humans, in different situations. It's really something complex to measure, especially since different places in the world have different cultures and traditions, resulting in different actions having different meanings. Hence, actions would be only a bad measurement. (I believe it is rude to make noises when eating in some countries but I believe it is okay to do so in some countries to express that it is delicious) Hence, intention of your actions is a better measurement.

There's a thousand and one issue to be discussed here. I want to focus only on ONE. (At least answer the one below before we move on to other possible discussions)

"Is IQ more important than EQ in today's society?"

My stand : No. EQ is more important than IQ. This may sound like a typical answer but let me do justice to my words.

Regarding the question, you may ask : Why not, "is High IQ more important than high EQ"? Because I believe people with high IQ are born with it. There's really no argument since you cannot change your IQ. And the answer doesn't mean anything to the rest of us who has average IQ.

Firstly, everybody knows that IQ is important, in the past and today. Children with high IQ are considered child prodigies. They are separated from the main stream education and enter special schools to help them develop their mind. They will most likely get the chance to finish education early and/or obtain scholarships in prestige schools. Their life is pretty much secured, with many employers on the lookout for them.

So, does all this make IQ important, especially high IQ? (Note : I'm not saying that people with high IQ has low EQ, they can have both)

How about people with low IQ? What prompt us, as humans to give them chances? It's compassion, love, sympathy and more.

Why bother to build schools and facilities for them and the disabled? Because we believe in the value of life. And I think this is part of EQ, not IQ.

I believe IQ is associated with knowledge. And in today's world, with all the mass media and World Wide Web, information is easily and freeily transmitted. A fine example would be you, reading this post that I wrote at home, and me taking information right off the net (Wikipedia).

Anybody can type in the search bar for whatever relevant information that they need and more often than not, they will get a reliable source of information which they can also cross reference with books and experts if necessary.

My point?

Information is readily available in this world. There's really no actucal need to excel in education anymore. You cannot beat the computer in memorizing facts. That itself is a fact. However, I'm not saying that humans are useless. On the contrary, humans are more important than ever to use all this information to live a better life and a higher standard of living. Health care is a very good example.

Today, we all live a rather comfortable life. We do not need IQ to excel and live a complete life with family, friends and things that truly matter in life. In fact, we find friends and family more important than material needs.

Today, seldom do we grow our own food. We prosper through trade and excellent services. EQ is part of our everyday life. Everything you do requires EQ, buying food, travelling on the public transport or even gamers, whom are bounded by certain codes even in the virtual world.

EQ can get you far, with the right contacts. There are so many skilled workers out there that unless you are exceptional and highly recognised, you are just a number to employers. A person who dresses presentable in job interviews is practising good EQ by making people have good impressions of him. A person who has friends in the job (especially in big companies) that they are looking for has a good headstart. You may be talented but without any opportunity you probably may not be able to showcase your talent.

My belief is that if it takes time to just train someone to be good in his job, then anyone capable enough will do. However, it is usually the contacts the person has which makes him so valuable as a person. And a person with good EQ has many good contacts.(Generally)

So much said. So what I'm saying is that EQ is important in everyday life. It is so much more important than IQ and it definitely determines where you end up in life.

Please give your comments. I believe this topic has too much to be discussed, may start something else.

P.S : Forgive me if you think the thoughts don't really answer the question. Your help and opinions are really appreciated.

my take is that eq is something that has always been there. its your ability to apply yourself to your enviorment and that is key in today's society. but i cant just say that iq is useless either, it helps you in day to day life just as much as your eq does. iq is just the common sence and your ability to absorb information in a way that you understand it enought to apply it in your everyday life.
but without or ability to remember information we can not grow and come up with new solutions or discover something new. if nobody cared to learn we all just rely souly on computers for information we would inevitably collapse into a state of dissoray and repetiton wihtout end. not to mension what kind of chaos we would fall into if we ever lost electricity -ok we repeat are mistakes now but if people didnt care to learn we wouldent even have computers and internet, we would still think the earth was the center of the universe.
last point- iq is important for progress
eq is important to be able to intreduce progress into the world in a way that it will be accepted and interact with each other. - thusly both are essential

Okay... you're post was very long, but I'm just going to state things based on certain impressions on your ideas...

1. You seem to be working off the presupposition that IQ is given more importance over EQ by today's standards. Actually, EQ is beginning to become more and more substantial in providing prospective employers a view as to how their potential employee would perform in his/her given situation. Your idea of IQ being more important that EQ seems to be more of a classic understanding of IQ, more than anything else.

Regardless, it's true that EQ has more practical application than IQ; however, both rubrics offer insight into the personality/logical faculty of an individual, and speak of two completely different aspects of the human individual. Therefore, it doesn't make sense to assume one more important than the other. But like I said, I do believe that EQ has a more practical basis, at least with regard to employment.

2. IQ is not an inborn thing. People are not born with an "IQ"; rather, they are born with intellect. the IQ score is, like your definition provided, a "predictive measure" of one's logical faculty and only provides a rough depiction of an individual's intellectual capacity. It being predictive, it cannot compensate for any discrepancies such as emotional unrest of the examinee during the testing, or cultural peculiarities (i.e. use of language) that may make the test biased to certain cultures. As a battery test, it is constantly modified and updated to provide as accurate a result as possible, but it will forever be a predictive, and not a precise measure of one's intellectual capacity.

That said, an IQ is not an innate figure a person is born with, it is just his or her score in an exam. For what the IQ is worth, it is more so a specific indicator of intellectual deficiency, more so than it is a test to determine one's intellectual worth or capacity. Someone with high IQ is not necessarily smarter than the average Tom, Dick, or Sally as far as logical, cognitive though processes are concerned.

3. Regarding schools for people with low IQ. It is not because they are "stupid" that they are placed in such institutions. Schools for special cases (i.e. inferior IQ) have curriculum designed to aid people with deficient logical, cognitive processes. Can you imagine the stigma a child with low IQ would receive if he/she were placed in a regular institution with people of normal IQ? Can you imagine the ridicule he/she will receive because she can't seem to understand that 1 + 1 = 2? As much as anything, it is out of empathy that special schools were made.

4. Regarding IQ and knowledge... having high IQ does not mean someone has a lot of knowledge. For one thing, IQ is only a numerical measurement of one's intellectual capacity ~ meaning, their ability to process information and understand it's interconnections under each individual human intellectual capacity (i.e. cognitive mathematical, logical reasoning, spacial, etc...). Knowledge is the result of the assimilation of information from the environment. As you said, anyone is capable of accessing this knowledge, but it is more a question of how each person processes and interprets this information to turn knowledge into a meaningful form of wisdom.

In short, someone with high IQ may be knowledgeable, but that does not necessitate wisdom. If anything, IQ has nothing to do with wisdom.

5. Regarding the importance of IQ and EQ in life ~ IQ, as is anything, is only an indicator for one's intellectual capacity. As far as practicality goes, it does not have much appreciative value. On the other hand, EQ is just as "unmeaningful" as it is practical, since it is an application of one's empathetic response to certain situations. You can pretty much say that it's "applied intellect" ~ however, it's representation as a number does not have much meaning. Someone with "high EQ" is basically someone who is more empathetic, but that does not translate to a "more efficient employee" or an "effective vehicle for social change", or whatever different applications you can think of in modern society.

As far as employment goes, looking at both IQ and EQ are essential to get a good picture of a prospective employee. In the end, giving importance to one is denying the other faculties of a human being as a whole. It isn't enough to simply be empathetic ~ one also needs to reason and understand, logically, certain situations. You can say it's "thinking with the mind, understanding with the heart, and acting with the gut". A well rounded individual should understand the importance of both IQ and EQ, and not simply delegate importance over the other.

Great Replies so far..

I'm really at a lost of words..

However, let me post what my friend has to say.. He read it on my blog and posted this as his comment :

Quote from my friend:

i agree wif ur post on EQ vs IQ.

u may wish to explore AQ (application quotient) = EQ + IQ in e right combination. it's in study now but i doubt there will b conclusive results... such things though impt, are relative. i dun believe equating them wif numericals is a true reflection of one's character. each person has a good mix of IQ and EQ in some grey areas which might not be clearly visible. the unfortunate thing in society is tt it still measures merit with IQ, whether or not tt person will carry far in life is altogether another different story. those shortlisted wif high IQ will get dumped into e open deep sea, and everyone struggles for survival (n im hopeful everyone can survive coz they haf good IQ). and of course those with good EQ will b able to survive the strongest currents n reach the shore.

perhaps society will nid to tweak. how can we measure EQ? interviews r all abt wayang. at least IQ can b shown black and white wif paper qualifications

My IQ - around 190
I don't know my "EQ" however... I assume that IQ is more important then.
I am really good at reading peoples feelings, and correcting emotional wrongs, so I guess my EQ would be good.

Good question, does accurately reading people's feelings and correcting emotional wrongs means that someone has good EQ?

I hope I'm not offending you dIECHERS, just quoting and using this example..

IQ can also mean the way you react or decide on certain things right? which also means it involves judgement based on your emotion, so if EQ is only based on emotion, IQ therefore is more important coz it uses EQ as well.

i guess its kindda inter-linked, both IQ and EQ. depends on the individual, some uses IQ more than EQ (logical ones) while some uses EQ more than IQ (emotional ones). i guess its just how someone reacts to a particular situation. some situations need more IQ from the individual and vice versa.
