Interesting topic. I'm adopted so I hope to one day find my natural born family and learn about them. I have no memory of them; so I think it'd be very informative and interesting.

As far as I know we're a mixture of Chinese-Filipino-Japanese-Korean. My cousins have told me we also have Hispanic and Dutch blood but I'm uncertain because it hasn't been proven.

It's great to know lineage, that way I can be acquianted with different cultures and ethnicities.

Plus, it gives a good idea as to why I look SO ASIAN. >.<

i think it's important to know where you come from and the history of your family. however that's pretty much it. it doesn't matter if you're a descendant of george washington or if your dad is ronald reagan's nephew. you might share the same blood, but you are two completely different people. you probably won't follow in that person's footsteps, and your parents shouldn't expect you to.

my ancestors lived in the province of guangdong for many generations before fleeing to vietnam after the communists won the chinese civil war. both my parents were born in saigon and left for america during the sino-vietnamese war.

I think it's interesting to some people. Such as myself.
But it's not important.

I'm curious about the people's views in knowing their family's lineage and how much it matters.

There are a lot of people who live out the lives of their ancestors. Some get obsessed about finding out who there ancestors are or who they are related to at present. There were tons of articles published saying that Obama was 10th cousins with Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie with Clinton and Celine Dion, McCain with Bush, et cetera et cetera.

Here's a fact that I would like to share with all of you:
There's a term called Ancestor-worship, aka Ancestor Veneration or Ancestorism. Basically, it's the belief that the deceased relatives are still existing and that the family must continue on its filial duty to take care of these 'ancestors.'

What is up with this obsession of knowing your whole family lineage?

So what's your opinion about it? You could also share some of your family history/ancestry if you know of it
Hm, I'll begin by...
stating my own family history, my family was from mainland China, and they basically are very traditional and has this thing with telling all the young children that we should be proud of our clan since we descended form the royals. My ama (grandma) and angkong (grandpa) kept telling me that our family are descendants of the Li family who founded the T'ang dynasty, and basically they never stopped blabbing about it, well my ama stopped cause my angkong died so she didn't have anyone who would willingly blab about it. But it's nice to know where I came from, it's just not something that I really need to take at heart, cause well the T'ang dynasty is over, and I really don't care about what happened in the past although it is nice knowing about one's past.

For me, it's nice knowing about my own family history but I think it's really unnecessary to dwell on it or obsess about it. Live your own life and not someone else's. Make your own legacy and not continue the legacy of others. Carpediem I say. But that's just my opinion.

didnt they burn all the old stuff (records of family's lineage included) during that cultural revolution?

heck, i would like to know where im from....

I don't care about my ancestry at all. My ancestors were violent conquerors, that wiped out entire races of people.

Thats awesome, you should feel honored to have such awesome ancestors.

But i know nothing about my ancestors, don't really care either. I just don't see how my ancestors effect me if they are dead.

They were conquerors, that is awesome, it doesn't much matter how they conquered, the point is they were conquerors, which is awesome.

I have been surrounded with both my mom and dad's heritage almost all of my life, but i don't have to know everything about my family , because no matter what they have done or who they were, (They didn't always get their money legally) I'm still me. But sometimes you find a piece of yourself in your heritage.

Warning: Be careful digging up the past.

I'd like to know if anything interesting ever existed in my family's history, but I really don't care if I know, it won't do me any good after all, unless I find out I'm a descendant of a still living rich family which is somewhere and I can mooch of them, but other than that, not that important to me.

Well, I think it's fun to find out who you're realted to. Just a few months ago, I found out my grandfather was Native American. Also, I have a few white people in my family.

I know very little about my family lineage... but although i ask alot of questions from my lola/grandma there's just things that seem always unclear. she told me that my grandfather were spanish-chinese descent... the Philippines have been under serveral races like chinese, americans, spanish, japanese etc... she'd tell me that her mom has spanish blood... things like that... and they'd always been strict about delicadeza...

i don't find it a must to know ones lineage but it sure would be interesting to know ones origin...
