In my opinion, popular kids are driven by a high self-esteem, wealth, and yes, pushy parents. It starts off young. Parents enroll the to-be football-stars and head-cheerleaders into their sports at a very young age. Other parental influences, such as bringing up their children wearing brand-name/expensive clothing, constant praise towards them, and surrounding them around similar people builds up the environment to build your typical "popular kid". Self-esteem/confidence takes over from there when they start jr.high/highschool to "expand the social circle".

Confidence.
That's all there is to it.

But then there's the annoyingly popular people
who wear brand name crap and flaunt
how rich their parents are cause they use
their daddy's money to buy their 80 dollar shoes ;]

I thought 80 dollar shoes r regular price... i mean when i was little i didnt buy 80 dollar shoes i bought like 30-50 dollar shoes... so i understand that... anyways tho i do agree wit u wit ppl who r annoying and jus brags about money and crap~ so mayb u may not b able to afford brand name clothes but hey it doesnt matter the purpose of clothing it self is to cover ur body... altho fashionable clothing seem nice:D

in our school, everybody is equal.. if there is discrimination or the school is doing something bad again thier is always someone who will defend and fight what is right :P

besides smart people are popular, fashionable people are popular, friendly people are popular, working students in school are popular, student officers are popular..

there are alot of ways to be popular.. ehe

I figure - that the whole difference and workings works like this... at least around my school:

People watch TV
Women have their own personal expectations as to what they NEED to be in order to become complete. They believe a hot guy - rich Ipod - materialistic exsistances more or less is what they need. Now - in my school - I found that between women theres a " king of the hill " concept always going on. One women needs to be better than the other always, even at the top there isn't really that much up there, but perhaps it's similar to the gain of power and authority which humans crave endlessly through our rooted systems. This inturn creates differences among women.

Among men I find differences however they aren't as seemingly common and noticeable as I found for women. The men too have the same sort of case as women - however some are unintentionally popular. You will find that some men have the need to look better than others only to feel the position of a leader among his or her collegues or the general public. To attain the feel of the leader - the men attempt to complete tasks that perhaps the general public or his collegues would find difficult.

As some people have replied - it's based on how they are raised, that too is true, and it plays a big factor, but as my time is limited this is as much as i can type up - I'm certain i did miss out on several factors and points and i apologize for my lack of time. Please correct me if you think me wrong in anything I have said, however note that this is what i have gathered from my environtment and may not be as applicable to yours as it is mine.
