Ah. hacking...

I suppose I can see why everyone thinks that hackers "hack" because they're bored. This may be true for a select few hackers who hack because they've nothing else to do, but it really doesn't make sense when you think about it. "Let's break the law because I'm bored!"

No... I, like Whiteshields1830, believe that hackers have many reasons for hacking. Some hack for the feeling of accomplishment they feel when they finally crack that especially hard shell/"code" or however you'd like to interpret it. Others feel as though they're sharing knowledge that should be free for everyone by hacking into a system and spreading that knowledge on the Internet. But mostly, I believe that hackers hack just because they can. They don't care what people think of them, though they might care how many people have heard of their deeds, good or bad.

It's like a virtual skills contest where the best minds gain the most recognition by compromising reputedly "secure" networks, such as the U.S. government's computer systems or CNN and various university campuses around the world...

Might I recommend looking up The Hacker's Manifesto. It's almost like an official answer to this question. I think everyone should read it before even discussing hackers.

I would like to add to the recommendations, Dan Verton's The Hacker Diaries : Confessions of Teenage Hackers for teens. It at least gives some insight on how hackers came into being...

Hackers hack; and we don’t know why they do such. These people knew it is against the law and it's forbidden, but they still do. Some people even motivated to be like these people. Why do you think these people hack?
Challenge, power, ego trip, and thrill. It's like a friend once said, it's a thrill-seeking sport that requires stamina, patience, persistence, curiosity and a dollop of arrogance. For some it's about chasing a piece of glory; for some it's about needing to challenge self; for some it's about earning some pocket money, and for the rest it's about tweaking the law's nose.

I don't think it's to kill boredom, though. Hackers seem to be more into challenging themselves and each other to better each other. Like how online gamers are. That's how it seems to me, anyway.

I had a very close friend in high school who got expelled for hacking into a bank in Germany. He didn't take anything but it warranted a federal investigation that involved the FBI coming to our school and taking apart our servers. He ended up getting a full ride to MIT despite never having graduated high school and I believe he's working for the government part time. He turned his passion and hobby into a living by stepping slightly outside of the box. Ethics are really subjective. He's not a bad person and it turned out well for him. He told me he did it because he enjoyed a challenge. I can understand that.

Reason 1. They are stupid.

Reason 2. They have no life.

Reason 3. They like to.

And reason 4. They feel like it I guess. =(
