When you hear the phrase "Asian Pacific American Heritage Month", what does it mean to you? APAHM is just like Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. It's a celebration of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United Stated. It is to honor the achievement of many Asian and Pacific Islanders in the US. APAHM is also a way to teach the Asian-Pacific American youth about their lost culture and tradition. The APAHM is celebrated in May of each year. Many countries come together and there is a lot of traditional activities to participate in.

Let's go back in time for a while. Since the 19th century, Many Asian and Pacific Islanders have helped with the development of the U.S. Many sold goods in New York, and others worked on sugarcane fields in Hawaii. In 1848, started of the California Gold Rush had attracted many Chinese miners. After the Foreign Miner Tax have been past, the Chinese left the gold fields and started their own businesses in California. They owned many shops and restaurants, that's why their neighborhood was called Chinatown. Later on, the U.S. governernment hired Chinese immigrants to work on the trancontinental railroad, which run from the Atlantic to the Paific Ocean. Then, people from all over Asia started to move to the U.S. Those inclued Japanese, Vietnamese, Laotians, Cambodians, and Indians.

Many Asian-Pacific Islanders moved to America, and they had families here. Most of them are trying to lived so much of the American ways that they forgot their children know little to nothing about their Asian-Pacific culture and tradition. In the school system, they learn about the Vietnam War, Chinese railroad workers, and Japanese interment camps. But all these history lead to the growth of America. As a result, Asia-Pacific children lack knowledge about their native history and heritage. This APAHM celebration consists of many traditional activites that might be a good and fun way to help these chidlren to learn about their own culture. Also, it's a good opportunities for the Americans to learn about our unique culture, tradition, and beliefs.

Asian Pacific Ameican Heritage Month is held in May. They chose this month to celebrate because of two important events. On May 7, 1843 was the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant in America. Also on May 10, 1869, it was the completion of the transcontinental railroad which was done by most Chinese workers. In 1977, Frank Horton and Norman Mineta suggested to have the first ten days of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Week, to the House of Representatives. Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced the same idea to the Senate. President Carter signed the Joint Resolution in 1978, and that was when the first Asian Pacific American Heritage Week was celebrated. Then in 1992, President George H. W. Bush signed the laws permanently expanding the celebration to one month long. The laws was supported by both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated with a lot of fun and educational activities. There are traditional dances from many countries. All kinds of unique food is available. My favorite was Chinese egg rolls, Korean's kimchi, and a lot of other food and drink from some other countries. In my experience, there was a group of people who performed Chinese Martial Art, it was awesome to watch! I also love the Korean dancer because they look so graceful when they're dancing. It was nice and exciting.

In conlusion, I think Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is really awesome! It's a great opportunities to experience all kinds of different culture. You get to watch unique dances and taste delicious food. I can't think of anything better than this. It is almost May and I will be dancing too, so I have to go practive dance with my friends now. I hope you all will join me at the Asian Pacific American Hertiage Month celebration in Tampa on May 3rd, 2008. I know I will have a great time and I bet you will too.
