Is there overreaction of parents on video game violence?

-Grand Theft Auto IV has a rating for ages 17 and higher - which means it is not meant for youngsters and few would support letting kids play a game that allows them to beat cops. ( lap dancing strippers and splattering blood)

-Quick google search of violent video games..

honestly I don't think video games make kids do violent things I think like u said they overreact it no big deal when I play gand theft I don't think about going out and shooting the police The real problem here is that PPl just wanna look for something to blame when we teen act out when the real problem is they should be looking in the street to who is selling there kids drug and guns I think video games have a less than 1% chance of having influence on violent acts

Parents are stupid they complain about violent video games but yet they buy their children those games. I saw a kid walk into the game section in wal-mart and a kid 10 or younger wanted to buy a grand Thieft Auto and his went and bought without even careing about the rating.

actually, violents videogames are more a symptoms.

Naturally violents people will go toward violent game. I dont think a violent person will enjoy animal crossing. He/she may, but while they are in blood lust, they will more enjoy virtually skinning human and shooting aliens... or roll over hookers =P

So its not the videogames causing the violence. Its the violent people getting attracted by violents videogames.

Our parent was playing cowboys and indians, shooting each other all the time. Not only it was violent it was also extremly racist =P No one made drama about it. I think society is trying to find excuse for their failure and like to blame everything arround them to not admit its their fault.

Its not only sad but also slightly pathetic. -sigh-

Aren't there already MULTIPLE threads for this?

I mean this could have easily gone here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-459/Jack-Thompson.html

or here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-1557/Do-video-games-causeencourage-violence.html

or even here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-90714/why-do-we-accept-malevolent-violence-as-entertainment.html...

But your topic might be a bit different as you are asking if there is an overreaction by parents (I still think that would fit best in the Jack Thompson thread as that is exactly what he relates his lawsuits to)...

Anyways, in short I would have to say that yes there is often an overreaction by parents to game violence, largely in part because there is a vocal segment of people who have conducted poorly executed studies and of those who espouse false data or who falsify it themselves and parents are far to likely to believe these falsehoods because of their intentions to keep their children safe and pure.
