The Military - a necessary evil?

I'm just curious - what with the hunt for Bin Laden and the unrest in Myanmar - the military has been viewed as a tool for destruction and reformation, as well as the long stick for supremacy and power throughout history and in any country. Is it really a necessary evil? If so, why? And have you ever considered a military carrier?

For me, being born with a grandfather, uncles and father serving in the military is quite interesting since I was able to go with them to the hangars where they keep the planes in the base and go with them when they do test flights in helicopters. I have always thought of their job as necessary to the welfare of the country and to the stability of our nation. And if asked if I have ever considered going into the military, I would honestly say that I've always considered it - but to my frustration I wouldn't pass the physical exam since I'm an asthmatic T_T
But due to the turmoil in the militia in the country nowadays (Trillanes fanning fires of coup d'etat) and the Generals in Myanmar saying that the militRY tKES hold of the government because civilians are not fit to govern the country, makes me wonder if it really is a necessary evil.

I think its evil, but then its for defense. But then again, the only reason we need defense is because other countries have military and could attack...anyways I heard about whats happening in Myanmar, horrible...those monks are brave ^^ The military does cause destruction...but then if you have a good leader, everything will be all right

In a way I agree but then most disagree, the only way they would be able to keep peace is to either don't do a thing or make other countries fear them. But then, when you fear something, you also want to destroy it. That can't be good <.>

I wouldn't say the military is evil, the officers behind it can be evil, but very rarely is a WHOLE government-owned military force is evil.

Necessary? Yes. We, as humans need the feeling of safety, and the ability of invading if need be. It gives us a sense of...control. As much as I'd like to say we don't need armies, we do.

Cops are enough...

The police in the United States are akin to an occupying army. They're armed with military grade weapons and vehicles.

Food for thought.

Cops are trained for law-enforcement and it mostly operates in internal jurisdiction. You can't send cops outside their territorial jurisdiction. It's illegal for example for a policeman to arrest a smuggler or a wanted man in Malaysia if he's only authorized to do his job in Indonesia; unless he's a member of INterpol? Correct me if i'm wrong.

Evil? Are you kidding me? Wow...Just wow...People who are going to say that it is evil or even unnecessary are either just stupid or ignorant. A military is no more evil than the average person or society; both of which happen to be just as susceptible to control and thus being ordered to commit acts of "evil." In all actuality, militaries are to perform the same duties for their countries as security guards do for private companies...Now are you going to tell me that all security guards are "necessary evils?" The fact is that we don't live in paradise, we live in reality...Militaries are tools of peace and of war - it all depends on how their country and its leaders wish to wield it...Those who wield the power are the ones that actually matter whether they are evil or not...

You know something though - Humanity = Evil...So there! Maybe we should do the universe a favor and just nuke ourselves to death!

thats because they really cant do shit. if every country were to disband military sure there would be peace but as history shows, peace will only be interupted by some leader building up his army just because he has ideas of world controll or he just wants security but other countries seeing this will take it as a threat and build up there own until one small event causes an entire world to go to war.

wwI and wwII anybody?

military isn't an evil, it depends on the purposes of what you use them for, and even then it's not their fault, but the person who decided upon that. the military is necessary and very important for defense of a country. they're here to protect the people, so instead of us sacrificing our lives, it's them. you got to think more highly of them.

You make it sound as if the military is a puppet controlled by the puppetmasters (which is quite true to some aspects) rather than a unit of individuals with a tough job.

Well it is both actually...Its job is to obey the orders of those appointed over them to fulfill service to those who they protect - the people of their country...Personally, I see service to one's country as one of the highest things that a person can do in life - God, country, corps...Note: I am going military as soon as I get out of college...

The Military has technically one purpose: to defend the country during times of crisis.
But this is usually abused.

Personally, I see it as a sign of love for one's country, defending your precious, beloved home to the death. A patriotic individual.
