I think we are wasting good money on the military.
And America should slightly stay out of national affairs.
I mean its good to lend a hand.
But full on spending millions for troops to fight in other countries is a bit stupid.
Then again I don't really care since I'm moving outta here as soon as I can.

The military's power is meant for protection of the nation that it resides within and its people. That has always been the case. There are some generals or kings who simply choose to use that power for malevolent purposes.

It is a necessary evil, as it were, but it is very much a strong possibility for a nation's military to become out of control. Power is pure, but it corrupts small minded idiots quite readily, man or woman.

The military is needed for the sake of the country's protection, and I don't know about any other country, but in the US, the military's also a means for a steady paycheck/ chance at education where there was none, depending on where they're from. That was my reason for signing up: to pay off student loans, 'cause chances at getting enough to pay that off and still live was slim where I'm from in MS...

It's like we use the military, and they use us in turn. Now, HOW they use us, I've grown to have doubts about in recent years, with them wanting to cut our numbers, yet they want to still send folks all over the place. In the AF, all that's been spat at us over the past few years is "try to do more with less"; never seen such a mess of things in all my 14 years, esp. in the Comm world... It seems like the less sense things make, the more they're on board for; more sense, they think in terms of 'cost', and don't want to do it. Go figure...

@Kittychi75 you think the AF's version of "do more with less" is tough you should see the miserable illegitimate servicemen in the Marine Corp who've had "less" to start with haha. Oh and those cut backs are very real across all of the branches an AF and Army buddy of mine got out of their contracts a full six months early since they didn't want to re-enlist. Heck the Marines and Navy are refusing re-up packages like it's cool and there's tons of talk about cutting benefits... at this rate we'll end up with 30 y/o generals since nobody will want to stay in the service the full 20 years.

Half the time my husband ends up a cross between Martha Stewart (her "improvise" mentality at least) and McGuyver, in the armory, just to make sure the grunt's weapons fire properly. I don't know about necessary evil but I do know that any and all great nations that spread their military to far and too thin fell very soon there after. I support our troops but they should be stateside to protect their homeland instead of dispersed sitting around getting picked off in the dessert or on an expensive float with no real objective other than "training".

Lord help us when our military can no longer preform as intended due to political idiocy.

I don't like the military being referred to as evil. The thought itself undermines everything this country has sought after, and instead gives attention to the bleak aspects of war, from the losing-man's standpoint.[sure, any country we've kicked the crap out of might see us as evil] The military is necessary, and protects us, If someone needs to know my every detail why, then ask away. But at times, questioning the very thing that gives us security every night from being attacked, that provides us with the land we tread upon with blissful grantedness, seems very naive to me.

It's interesting that civilians can call the military evil. They have so much power to stop the military or send them to war. You don't see people out protesting anywhere near the levels that occurred during the Vietnam War. The military, at least the US military is accountable to it's citizens. Too bad they just don't care enough to do anything.

It all depends on your perspective, in the 19th century the Royal Navy was used to hunt down slave ships and free slaves, but was also used for less noble efforts. In 1981 Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands so the British went in and kicked some butt (a pretty big feat considering the distance involved) and liberated the islands (though the Argentinian government seems intent on starting another war which they can't win). In 1812 the US invaded Canada, the Canadians and British had a bit of a scrap with the Americans (although the British were busy with Napoleon at the time), together we repelled the American invasion keeping Canada "free".

On the other hand, the British military hasn't been the nicest of military powers, but it prevented the French from taking over the world and the Germans from taking over the world, the fact that the British had took over the world is besides the point.
