^ there's a Japanese and Chinese tradition called "red thread", when couples tie a red thread on their pinky finger, because they believe that it was destiny that connects them together, so it actually means that they vow to each other that they will be together eternally, hence, that's where the pinky finger promise actually starts, you use your pinky finger as a promise to someone that you will never break it, and look it up until the end.

i think the pinky promise is kind of cute , but what happens if u dont keep the promise?
Posted 5/1/08
it started as just a mere symbol of connectivity between one to another.

the it gradually worked its way to symbolising the promises.
it was most likely a european thing.

but chinese people have the "red string" thing.
