So... I started this topic because I had an argue with a pal and I wanted to see what others have to say. So please... Don't be shy. Since I opened this topic... I think I should go first. So... for me, the saddest anime I've ever seen would probably be X, especially the Movie.

i don't think that animes are so sad, i mean if an anime is sad it s probably because one or more of the charchters had a rough time... i watched full metal alchemist and i was really sad when hughes died, he didn't deserved to die he was a good guy and he was funny and the ending of the series was sad, because they tried so hard to revive their mom and got through a lot of trouble just to uncover that the philosophers stone wasn't so great after all, and the fact that they had to defeat that homunculi that looked as their mother was also sad, not to mention that a lot of charachters died , but i really enjoyed it, but the sadest of all was x the movie, although i really enjoyed:)

You have your point there... If we come to think of it... Wolf's Rain was pretty sad to. It's just the perspective you look at... Btw...another anime that may be nominated to the Sadness Trophy might have been Angel Sanctuary... only if there were not such a short number of episodes (three).

totally right sawyer, it was sad because of the story but it was a good ending setsuna didn't had a reason to live in a world where there was no sara, u must read the manga man it s really cool, and it has some very sad parts in it when setsuna thinks about the argues he had with his mom..

Death Note- the problems that various people have to go through in this series are horrible. Light, as good as he thought was being, ended up corrupted by power that he should have never had in the first place. Because of this many (innocent) people had to suffer with the loss of a loved one or the fear of dying themselves.

Angel Sanctuary- I've never fell in love with any of my siblings, but if I ever did I can see myself going through the same bouts of depression that Setsuna went through.

Naruto and other series' from Shonen Jump-In every series the main characters have to get through a lot of obstacles. Also, they have to deal with rough childhoods and the loss of people close to them. Of course that may be cliche to some, but I don't think I'd be fond of reading a story about someone who has everything going for them.

Battle Royale- I admit that the manga is horrible. But if you read the novel, I'm sure that you'll end up feeling sympathy for atleast one character.

FMA- I've honsetly never gotten into the show. And I always miss when they air old episodes. But I did see the episode when Hughes died, and even though I hardly knew who he was, I still felt bad for him. Also, the first episode was sad, too. I guess I'll look for the manga.

Kite- I usually hate anime that try to have sex scenes for the sake of having sex scenes, but Kite was understandable. The storyline was smart and the artwork was brilliant. They have edited versions if the sex irks you out.

Grave of Fireflies - Beautiful movie.

Fruits Basket- I'm bored with the series now, but when I first started reading it, some characters made feel a lot of sympathy.

Berserk- One of my favorite manga/anime series.

Gantz- the manga is much better than the anime. You actually feel more connected to the characters.

Millenium Actress- I wasn't really that into it, but it was still good.

Elfen Lied- Just a little.

Boys Next Door- Kaori Yuki knows how to create a lot of drama without going over the top.

Trigun- Wolfwood....

Akira- I think the saddest part for me is that even after watching it so many times, I still don't think I get the full picture.

Samurai X- A very hardcore and more depressing version of Rurouni Kenshin.

Cowboy Bebop- The last episode.

EVA- The whole series was great. Especially the last episode. The only problem was that Shinji was such a <insert derogatory term>.

Saikano-Watch.

Monster- Another dramatic anime/manga series with intelligent writing.

I can't remember much else right now.

I would say Grave of The Fireflies the story, when it takes place, how they had happiness despite what they were going through, the battle for survival, and in the end, they die
