Yes it is a very broad topic, and i thought it might be helpful for my grade to have the input of the CR community.
So whatever you can come up with, please throw it in here.

Sub Topic: Over population, Fossil Fuels, Global Warming.
Basically how we are draining up the worlds resources at a very fast pace.

Easy one, poverty, extremists...terrorism. AIDS/HIV...the list goes on and on...Exploitation of cheap labor...
*Maybe you could pick just one broad topic, instead of them all, and maybe some one might be able to help you better!

There are so many and they all depend on where you live etc as to what you think is a dilema. I think gopher got most of them ^-^ but some (education, gay rights) depend on what country you live in.
I would say the main ones would be Global Warming, Technology, Energy, Health (of people and environment as we are all linked) and Nuclear War.
Global warming is a natura process, but along with the increase in the use of fossil fuels, it now poses a major threat to our lives. It includes the dilemmas of what we need to change and also poses the question of 'is it too late?'. It also shows how the different countries on the world all need to work together.
Technology isn't a major dilemma at the moment but is a future concern for an increasing amount of people. It brings up the idea of the loss of face-to-face communication and also practical issues such as theft, security and privacy (cameras).
Energy links in with global warming and once again shows the problems that the world will face economically and practically in the future if changes arent made.
Health is because of the increase in fast food and obesity. It's also an issue in cases such as bird flu and the growing immunity of people to antibiotics. As for the environment- polution of water and air, extinction of animals and deforestation.
I dont know enough about politics to comment on nuclear threats but i do know enough to say that it is dilemma at the moment. We need to find a way to keep the peace without putting everyone in danger.

Basically I think that the major dilemmas of 'our time' aren't taking place at this time. Our past experiences have taught us so we now realise our mistakes and the threats they pose to our futures. Hence, our dilemmas involve how to preserve a clean, prosperous and peacefull future.
Oh and i would also like to add copyright laws and legal issues that the popularity of the internet is increasing!

Goodluck with your essay ^-^

Hey, what do you mean problems AND dilemmas. They are significantly different.

A dilemma is a problem offering two (or more) solutions, each of which is equally unfavorable.

The first dilemma that comes to mind is the so called Prisoner's dilemma. Things would be much better off if we learned to become 'superrational' and cooperate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilemma

If you see two kids drowning far away from each other but you only have time to save one which one do you choose. Now thats a real dilemma.

^good point.
Reminded me of something I did in ToK once.
Most people would say that this is the right choice:stopping a train full of people from crashing by somehow diverting it and killing a single worker on the track instead.
However the automatic reaction to the following is normally that it is wrong: Killing a man for his organs so that other people can have them and live.
Yet they are basically on the same principle!

I do think that the thread title just means the general stereotypical problems that we are experiencing though.

Gah! Game Theory, run away! There are about fifteen classes at my school that are just fronts to teach game theory.

Ah, and I forgot Robotics / A.I.

And problems of "Our Time"? Does that mean Now, or our generation, or our lifetime? So broad!

Those are basically my top issues (minus a few), though I would throw terrorism on there as well.

Thats the title, word for word, i also noticed the dilemma/problem thing but what was i to tell them (my teachers)?

Here is what i interpreted from the title:
What do you belive to be the thing that humanity as a whole should be most worried about in our present time and looking into the future, as far as this generations future offspring are concerned(like + 70 years).

this guy makes a pretty good case of the organization and prioritization of the biggest problems of the world, but in a practical manner that can actually fit the world's budget.

rise of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the United States and across the globe -- as the world begins to eat, live and die like we do in America.
