"most artists define moe not as a reference to a character so much as any personality that elicits a protective or loving response from the audience. For instance, being naïve is very often considered as a favoured feature, but characters who have complicated and extremely deep thoughts may also be considered as moe depending on the audience. Appearance aside, the personality of moekko can vary widely; a tomboy or a sarcastic cynic could be considered moe given a specific audience. Some of the more popular moekko actually have a few traits that do not traditionally fit into the label, and others have gained such a following by accident."

From wikipedia, this is how it started basically, now a bunch of people who couldn't figure it out before think it just means "cute". Using a more popular anime as an example, Haruhi from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya could be considered moe, because she acts like a tomboy half the time but deep down inside you know she really loves kyon.

So in other words, Moe is the characteristics of the character and not the character themselves. So long as the characteristics of the character are perceived by the audience as moe, then it is moe?

Well moe is kind of hard to define. But I guess mikuru asahina ?

Seriously though, I don't find most moe character too are TOO MUCH MOE to be interesting at all. Too much moe resulting me to dislike them, so balance us definitely important. This explains why mikuru is the only character in haruhi that I actually disliked

Probably Honey from Ouran... he's a boy lolita who is super cute and loves cake, oh and he's 18 but he looks like he's in elementary school But Ouran makes fun of all the different types of moe so everything is exaggerated.

He's not my favorite or anything, but he is very moe.

Natural airhead

I guess the way to define Moe in understandable terms is:

Something that instantly elicits protective response, or just makes you go AWHH. It doesn't necessarily mean any sexual attractiveness, I guess it could just be Kawaii
