Review of Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations OVA

One should not jump the gun and declare TTR just a boring sequel to the already boring series. It seems awfully formulaic and predictable at first sight - the group arrives at an alternate world, one of Sakura’s memory-imbued feathers resides here and they have to find a way to reclaim it. That’s basically what Tsubasa Chronicles is all about, but this time round, the anime goes deeper and answers the more fundamental questions that have been plaguing the followers of the series. The title basically says it: this show is all about revelations, and they are presented with oh so much suspense and anticipation. Plot twists and answers aren’t the only things that have changed; Production I.G kicks it up a notch by making the show grittier and edgier. The characters are more mature, their troubles are deeply relative and the impending dangers lurking at every corner are wholeheartedly felt. This risk undertaken by Production I.G gives the franchise a series that’s more three-dimensional and in-depth; a wise risk-taking indeed.

Another thing worth mentioning about the OVA is the music. It’s certainly decent, but in contrast of the original series’ long line of refreshing music, it seems one too few to showcase. I admit, it is not all that fair to judge this harshly, especially when this series is only 3 episodes long. The ones responsible for the music are the usually suspects - Makino Yui and the ever harmonious songbird Maaya Sakamoto, composed by none other than Kajiura Yuki.

Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations is a good change in direction from the dull original series. Fans of the television shows may look in dismay over the new approach from the originally wholesome image. I have to persuade them to reconsider their mentality and watch with an open mind. Sometimes, change is for the better. In TTR’s case, it’s the kind of change Bee Train should have made right from the series’ second season. My message to Bee Train is this: Learn from what Production I.G has done for one of your much coveted productions.

Review of Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora/Shattered Angels

Shattered Angels revolves around the life of Kū Shiratori who is a seemingly normal high school girl who enjoys school life in the giant city Academia, which is thought of as a symbol of recovery for humanity since already ten years have passed since the greatest disaster mankind had ever seen occurred. Kū has recently been having a recurring dream where a prince meets her and takes her away. One day, while all the students at her school are preparing for the upcoming school festival, the prince whom she has met several times in her dreams appears. The prince, whose name is Kyoshiro Ayanokōji, requests of her just as he had done in Kū's dreams, "Let's go, together...."

The series melds together several elements both familiar and new. The majority of the main characters appear to be involved in romantic relationships. Kū is often struggling to make sense of who is truly in love with whom. A large amount of kissing is witnessed very early in the series. The Absolute Angels are superhuman in nature and to remain so they must draw energy from a human being through the lips, a theme borrowed from Steel Angel Kurumi.

The series breaks from the regular battle etiquette in which the pilot of a mecha climbs into the cockpit. Rather, the Angels materialize and control their mecha from without or manifest specific parts of their bodies into large mechanized limbs. Throughout a battle, an Angel phases in and out of their angelic forms voluntarily and involuntarily. As in Kannazuki no Miko, the names of the mecha are taken from artifacts and iconic figures of Japanese and European mythology.

Read Or Die
Anime DVD Review

The most original and imaginative series we've seen in a long time, Read Or Die (ROD) is about 3 sisters who have a special talent in "Paper Master". Think of it as something like origami coming to life. They can make paper and books turn into animals and objects, from bulletproof dragons to lockpicks.

The story begins with Nenene Sumiregawa, a writer, whose life is threatened by another writer who can't get his books published. Here we see the sisters at work making incredible animals, a bow and arrow that work and even a wall to prevent a blast of shattering glass. One of the most amazing scenes on this DVD is the creation of a large bird which engulfs an airplane and lands it safely on the ground. Based on a popular OVA series, the TV version brings with it all the style and sophistication of the original. This anime is cute, funny and very entertaining. Recommended for everyone!

Anime Soundtrack Review

This aggressive, stylish, jazzy soundtrack has all the earmarks of a score for a James Bond Movie. Tight strings reinforced with brassy highlights, underscored by an electronica rhythm, it sounds like it's trying to burst out of its shell.

Read or DieFortunately, it's tempered by eerie, mysterious, dulcet tones that conjure up images of fantasy and magic - which is appropriate, given the fact that it's all for Read Or Die, the TV series based on the OVA about 3 sisters who can make paper objects come to life.

Sheer fun and the "spy music" sound make this OST a winner even if you've never seen the series (but we highly recommend that you do -- it's a blast!). We're big fans of the classic "Bond" soundtracks, and this BGM Album apes the style perfectly, with style of its own to spare. Pick this up and you will not be disappointed, it's good stuff.
