Mushishi by Yuki Urushibara

Mushi have existed since the dawn of time, they range from very primitive life forms such as primordial organisms to rather intelligent ones such as animals, beasts and even humans. They live in a reality that is not quite the same as ours. They act of their own accord and can have strange or otherworldly effects on humans or communities that come into contact with them, they are neither good nor bad, but just trying to survive as well.

The tale itself is about a Mushi-shi (Mushi Master) named Ginko. A young man with hair as white as the clouds and a bright green eye. He travels the country side approaching communities or individuals who have come in contact with Mushishi and are feeling the effects.
The storyies in the manga are each very unique and will either have you sympathize with the afflicted characters, or kind of scared by the terrible things that these things can bring upon people.

Some of the stories included involve eye eating mushi, mushi that steal sound, A traveling swamp, a mountain god, a man chasing rainbows, a mushi that kills people then brings them back to life everyday, mushi that bring dreams to reality,

This manga actually won an award for it's short story The Light Of The Eyelids, which can viewed here. http://www.onemanga.com/Mushishi/4/. Personally I believe this anime heavily influenced the new series of xxxholic (of course this is alot more serious and scarier), with alot of the mystical happenings seeming to be derive from this show.

Note the following images are from the anime, but the stories are exactly the same as the manga in pretty much every way.

Mushishi is one of the greatest manga of all time, it's stories are second to none.
I think it gets overlooked alot because it's probably a bit too deep for the majority of young teenagers reading drama manga. It's alot different than the social norm of manga.

It's on my to-watch list. I've read about it in some magazine a while ago.
But for some reason I never feel like watching this series. There's always something better to do. It's about time I'm REALLY going to watch it.

Anyway, there already is a Mushishi thread.

Ah, allright. I saw all the anime pics and thought you meant both, the anime and the manga.

You did a good job on the post though, lots of information and pictures. Most people don't bother to even explain what their thread is about.

Hmm.. Manga sounds interesting too.. But I think I'll watch the anime first. It sounds interesting enough.

If you watch the anime, watch the 2nd one first, it's a lot better and the story that won the manga award.
The manga has 5 of the anime episodes in each book.

yeah for sure, but don't check it out first, it isn't as great as the manga or the anime.

Ugh, I think I should read the manga. The anime was just amazing.
It's sad how not many people know of this series.

Indeed and most people base their opinions off the first episode or story, which makes it seem like something from studio ghibli.
