What will be the winner? Blu-ray, HD-DVD or Downloads ?

The two different disk formats were supposed to be the latest battle in technology yet many people are now claiming that the next way of obtaining media will be by download. As many people here will probably download tv shows I was wondering what you think about the whole issue. I don't really understand the technical differences between the two disks so technical opinions are welcome!
Do you think their will even be a conclusion or will people buy products that are both Blu-ray and HD-DVD? Perhaps you think that we will skip over the technology completely and instead download higher quality programs off the internet in the future?

I work for a TV Network in Pyrmont, In Sydney Australia and they are currently updating 90% of their equipment to work with HD format shows.
I think HD-DVDs will kick off and be the popular medium for movies but downloads will still be the primary for TV shows. Especially with faster Internet connections always becoming available.

Well they have the combo player now so no biggie.

Since sony is with blue ray thats bad for blue ray.

I've heard the porn industry adopted hddvd, and we all know that porn > all. Something about being able to put your face on as if you were on the t.v. hum...

I think Blu-Ray. It'll be a slow process and it won't happen unless the companies lower their prices, but a disk that holds 25-50 GB is almost unreal. The picture quality is excellent and a bonus is it can read the data discs that most of us put our anime on.

HD-TV, not many people have them so HD-DVDs aren't all in the hype though they've been out longer than Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray is already in HD (some people even say it's beyond HD)

Downloads have always been in, and that probably won't change.

Overall, It would be a shame if Blu-Ray didn't catch on (eventually). But no one will pay $1000 for a DVD player. Maybe for a TV, but not a DVD player.

Actually all that bad news about the porn industry not supporting Blu-ray might be false. So I think it all depends on the future success of the PS3. But so far it doesnt look like the PS3 is even gonna be popular, sadly.

Of course not many people are gonna be buying these 1000 dollar players. Just like with any new format, it'll take at least 2 years for it to take off and start becoming mainstream.

^thanks for changing the title- i realised afterwards!

A lot of people are saying it depends on the ps3's success but there is also competition because of the companies that have signed up to the two disks. Blu-ray has Sony, Disney, Apple, Dell, Panasonic and Fox- surely that will give it a huge advantage over HD-DVD?

I think HD-DVD has more support, but that was last i heard. I'm not completely up to date on this.

One of the reason's that i say it depends on the PS3's success is that the PS3 could bankrupt Sony and they are the biggest supporters of Blu-ray. They are sort of the face of Blu-ray since when people think of Blu-ray they think of Sony. I'm not saying that if the PS3 fails, so will Blu-ray. But if the PS3 were popular Blu-ray would easily win. Since this isn't the case, one of their biggest plans to promote Blu-ray will have failed.

I didn't realise they were relying so heavily on the PS3. Playstation has always been successfull in the past but most people would probably say the XBox is its main competitor. This could cause problems as they have already released a HD-DVD drive that can be attached to xbox consoles. However, this could be positive for Blu-ray as it should be a while until a new xbox is released that may have a HD-DVD reader inside it. The annoyance of having a seperate HD-DVD drive could boost the PS3.

That separate USB HD DVD drive can also be used on normal computers though and it only costs 150-200 dollars. So you don't even need an Xbox 360 to use it.

That could be a plus for HDDVD then- but surely Bluray have released a seperate USB drive aswell? At the moment it seems that Blu-ray have the best films released while HDDVD has the best players. I know it's not of imense importance but i do think that HDDVD as a name is better! I cant imagine a 'bluray' section in a shop or someone saying 'i bought a new blu-ray yesterday'.

I think both formats suck, i've played the ps3 a couple times and watched talladega nights on blu-ray- and its just not worth the money

as for hd dvd, I watched a couple ficks at my cousins house and I was none too much impressed, both formats don't seem the awe inspiring and don't warrant the extra investment in my humble opinion

Yeah... Dvds are still being churned out...

I feel like Sony is gonna lose this one. I was rooting for them till I heard how buggy the PS3 was and how much other companys understand the importance of not losing the fight. Cheaper will probably win because sweet computers are loads more expensive than sweet TVs.

Does anyone have any information on why many people are saying that the PS3 is so bad? I think this will have a significant effect on the popularity of Blu-ray. It does have to be considered though that Blu-ray does have other major backers such as disney and apple.

PS3 has loads of backwards compatability issues. Like almost enough to say that it isn't backwards compatable. It's gonna take a lot of love for Sony to address 10% of them. That was enough for me to hold off on thinking about getting one.

Most people are complaining about the price of the PS3. Good thing Santa bought me one. I went to the store and they already have a large selection of Blu-Ray dvds (for movies not games), i didnt check out hd-dvds though.
