I look at it this way... It's not a really a matter of being realistic for most people. What they want is a believable experience. It doesn't take much to imagine an outrageous storyline, characters, and your stereotypical arch-types... (like Naruto... I won't bash it anymore).

So stories in any form of medium that give a believable experience attract more fans, and viewers. If you can relate to the characters, then the creators know what they are doing. Now if there is to distant of a gap, then people might get lost in some of the translation. But if it is completely out of this world, then it attracts a completely different crowd, and a lot of people like that as well.

It's all catering to taste, and there is no right or wrong, but what separates a really well put together story is the quality of, first the story line, second the characters, and third whatever form of medium the story is being conveyed in (Literature, movies, anime... etc...). These are the norms at least, there is always the occasional groundbreaking ones that no-one understands how they got such a large viewer base...

realistic anime is harder to make and more people can relate to it than the excessively unrealistic fantasy Anime. That's why realistic Anime gets more credit than the unrealistic ones.

NOTE by unrealistic i mean no sense in common sense, like would that ever be possible. I'm okay with a slight unrealism but if it's too much unrealistic you know that it is fake and well you get bored. wouldn't you want to watch something that you can relate too ?

I don't give a damn either way, and I can't imagine caring. However, I lean slightly towards unrealistic, so that I can enjoy making fun of it and enjoy the show at the same time.

Anime is fiction and should not be taken as fact. -.-

some animes are not fiction at all. I heard that Bokura ga Ita is based on a true story. I like both realistic and unrealistic. But then again, I wouldn't like overly exaggerated animes like Kirarin Revolution. From a japanese point of view, Kirarin Revolution is realistic because its not fantasylike, but its too unrealistic and exaggerated.

Why? Animes don't equal to real life. Sure I don't mind you prefer realistic animes to unrealistic ones, but why you guys like to grade the quality of an anime based on whether it's realistic or not? Mangakas usually express their wild imagination through the mangas they draw and the extra special effects and colours are only added by anime studios.

sport animes are an example. Prince of Tennis, Ring Ni Kakero and other over the top series.

BECAUSE ITS UNREALISTIC! THERE'S NO CHANCE OF PIRATES EATING A FRUIT AND THEN TURNING INTO RUBBER OR NINJA PPL JUMPING FROM TREE TO TREE, KILLIN EACH OTHER! its stupid!
