When you're going to start on making your manga. Sometimes its really hard to make complex environment for your background.

On this page, we will be dealing on many possible ways on creating your backgrounds.

This is my way of making Backgrounds:

First way:
Sometimes, I go to places, and pull out my sketch book and sketch the views that I see.
I also sketch places found on encyclopedias.

Don't worry if its not an exact replica on what you're trying to copy, as long as you know how the lines are drawn to make that specific backgrounds, its okay.

The real point of the sketching is to make your mind get used with the lines, it will make you draw it naturally and make many possible backgrounds on that specific sketch you made.

Second Way:

I usually play 3D online games, with beautiful backgrounds like "Perfect World."

I get a screenshot on the backgrounds, and redefine it to Adobe Photoshop to make it look, hand drawn. I know its cheating, but they'll never know how I do it.

If you are not a very backgroundy person (like me) another way is to concentrate on the mood rather than the content by using shadows and lighting rather than actual scenery. Of course this doesn't mean you can get away with it all the time....

Get Manga Studio Ex...
It is a paid software, but you can find it on google and download it for free if you are resourceful enough....
It is one good software to get started...

About backgrounds, it has ready-made tones, basic backgrounds such Japanese schools....towns and such....

They have pens that manga artist use too....G-pen, school pen...
I have yet to do a manga with the software yet...but I have a few examples of one page manga drawn and illustrated in manga studio EX....and you will find it very similiar to hand drawn manga by professional manga artist out there....

You could take pictures and trace over it with a light table and use that technique. I'm sure alot of artists do that if they aren't much good at them.

But, Light tables are expensive.

I'm not really sure, about it, I think, Manga Studio needs a specific format (Like Jpeg, BMP, or GIF). I'm not really sure what kind of format Manga Studio can support. But you can use Adobe Photoshop if you want.

well if you just download the trial then no you dont have to buy it, well at least not for the trial period. Now you can get adobe for "free" if say a "friend" happened to "hook you up" but be warned it can get kinda hairy trying to find that "free" way if you dont know what you are doing.

Oooo, haven't visited this group in a while, but yeah, I'm really not so good at drawing backgrounds, and as of yet I haven't really got a good photo editing software or the manga studio software (but should be getting photoshop cs2 in the mail sometime this week). I have finally started on my manga, but I need some serious improvement on the backgrounds (they still kind of suck ), but hey, at least I'm finally really trying instead of just saying that I would. Those are some good tips, and there's an idea if ya can't buy a really expensive light table, ya can make one of your own with a plain glass end table or coffee table with a desk lamp, or ya can even tape your page to a window...of course that makes your arm tired after a while (believe me, I know XDXD cause that's what I've had to do once before, since I don't really have any glass tables around here or a desk lamp) but anyway, these are some good tips on how to do backgrounds, that will be sure to help me out in the future.
