MUSIC IN NATURE

In the woods are songs of gladness
All the brooklets sing in rhyme,
While the birds trill merry madness
And the tossing trees keep time.

Do you hear a distant drummer
And a wild and sweet refrain?
Tis the thunderdrum of summer
And the music of the rain.

Lullabay, the song of Ocean
On her voice is calm and deep,
And the waves with ceaseless motion
Lull the weary world to sleep.

OVER THE GARDEN WALL

Over the garden wall
Where unseen children play,
Somebody threw a ball
One fine summer day.
I caught it as it came
Straight from the hand unknown,
Playing a happy game
It would not play alone.

A pretty ball with bands
Of gold and stars of blue,
I turned it in my hands
And wondered, then I threw
Over the garden wall
Again the treasure round
And somebody caught the ball
With a laughing sound.

When the Day’s HOT or COLD

On a morning cold and rainy
When strong wind rule the day,
A ray of sun I long to see
To drive the cold away.

But when the day’s too hot to play,
Too hot for fun and ease,
The beach is just the place to stay
To feel the gentle breeze.

Or else I merely stay at home,
Though warm the weather be
As gentle touch and pretty soon
A big fan whirls for me.

My Policeman

He is always standing there

At the corner of the square,
He is very big and fine
And his silver buttons shine.

All the cars and taxis do
Everything he tells them to do,
And the little errand boys
When they pass him make no noise.

Though I seem so very small
I am not afraid at all,
He and I are friends you see
And he always smiles at me.

Once I wasn’t very good
Rather near to where he stood
But he never said a word
Though I’m sure he must have heard.

The FISHERMAN

The fisherman goes out at dawn
When everyone’s abed,
And from the bottom of the sea
Draws up his daily bread.

His life is strange; half on the shore
And half upon the sea.-
Not quite a fish, yet not quite
The same as you and me.

The fisherman has curious eyes;
They make you feel so queer,
As if they had seen many things
Of wonder and of fear.

They’re like the sea on foggy days-
Not gray, nor yet quite blue;
They’re like the wondrous tales he tells-
Not quite-yet maybe-true.

He knows so much of boats and tides,
Of winds and clouds and sky!
But when I tell of city things,
He sniffs and shuts one eye!

The Duck

Behold the duck
It does not cluck
A cluck it lacks
It quacks
It is specially fond
Of a puddle or pond
When it dines or sups
It bottoms up

Dreams

Hold fast to dreams,
For if dreams die,
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams,
For when dreams go,
Life is a barren field,
Frozen with snow.

MEMORIES

Memories from childhood stay with us forever,
Taking us where we have been and will go,
Pieces of life that live on and will never
Let us forget we were young long ago.

Sometimes I wander back into those shadows,
Quietly being who I used to be,
Bringing to life all the joys and the sorrows,
Days that can't die while they still live in me.

Holidays linger and happy times glisten;
I can see everyone active and well.
I can still hear them if only I listen,
Feeling each motion and breathing each smell.

Life has such treasures that time's always stealing;
Nothing can ever entirely stay.
While you are young, you can capture each feeling;
Make all the memories you can every day.
