Meteor Garden II's first episode really surprised me. It was beautifully filmed and scripted without breaking character. That spanish song was fantastic. And they really did set up a double bind for Daoming Si that could have blown the first season out of the water.

That's why, while it wasn't terrible, I was so disappointed by the end of the season. There were some really interesting directions that it started to go in, and then it would just suddenly stop. For instance, after Ximen's interaction with his father (I'll avoid the spoiler if anyone cares), Daoming Si seemed to be contemplating parent-child relationships. I was expecting some sort of revelation about why his mother is the way she is. But then they started focusing on Meizou and Qinghe's sub-plots - I can't imagine why they thought it would be a good idea to throw two additional and completely unrelated romantic storylines that late in the season, and then devote so much screen time to them! - anyway, by the end of the season his mother is still a one-dimensional character. I feel like the filmmakers chose their focus poorly and the end result was a rushed resolution for the main plot line they had worked very hard to build up. I actually think Meizou's story would have made a good center for a spin off series, but here it seemed to clutter an already overstuffed vehicle.

The first and second halves of the season just didn't feel the same. It was like watching a bunch of half-dramas instead of one whole. Jing was re-introduced and then completely dropped by what - episode two? There was a whole sub-plot concerning a brother and sister who had no real purpose or connection to the main characters from either season. The cake scenario could have been connected to scenes from the first episode, or tied into Daoming Feng's motivation for making the deal that she did - but it wasn't. It didn't connect to anything else, so a potentially useful subplot again just felt like a distraction.

I can only guess that all of this additional material left them with too little screen time to wrap things up successfully, so instead of fully fleshing out the ending for the main characters, they had to scramble to try and resolve all of the side stories they had started. As a result, certain characters went from undying passion to passive acceptance (OFF SCREEN!) with hurried explanations for their change of heart that didn't ring true to their characters or how real people would behave. It made the ending seem like it wasn't earned for the main characters. And I mean - after the first season did such a great job of showing struggle before the payoff, the writers certainly can't claim that they don't know how to do better!

The worst thing about it was the fact that this story had so much potential. There was so much more that they could have done with the central plot and characters. Why did they have to throw in so many unnecessary new characters instead of developing the ones they already had? Ye Sha and Loony were the only new characters who merited the screen time they got. I disagree with the criticism I've seen that Shancai's screen time was reduced because Ye Sha was given too much exposure. It was reduced because no less than SEVEN brand new minor characters were thrown in and given extended plot lines.

It would have been easier to accept the season if it had been consistently bad, if there hadn't been brilliant moments within the mediocrity. This could have been the best drama sequel ever released. Instead it may be the most disappointing.

.....................................................

Wow - is this post rambly and redundant much? It's been a long time since I've had such an emotional reaction to a drama. Too bad it's for the wrong reasons.

Meteor garden 1 !

the part two is kind of disappointing for me because of love triangle between Ye Sha and Shancai. In part 2 the phase of the story gets slow, and part of it emphasized mostly about Ye sha, that' s why i didn't dare to finish the last remaining episodes of the story.

I love them both but I like Meteor Garden 1 better, You can actually felt the chemistry between Dao Ming Si and San Chai, In the second one Dao Ming Si has a memory loss, then Its like San hai and Huaze Lei are together but that's ok, I like Huaze Lei too.. ^_^
