The Beijing Olympics was suppose to be of good intentions and many of the Chinese are looking forward to it. However, as most of you know, there has been great turmoil in the country, especially in Tibet, who protests about China's rule. Through historical facts, Tibet was taken over by China in the 1950s and was look down upon, since colonialization was over many years ago. Because of China's rules, the people in Tibet, especially the religious people were not allowed to worship freely. The Dalai Lama and other religious people were chased out of the country and were consistently blamed for wrong doings they had clearly not commit. When the Olympics were decided to be run in China, the Tibetan people decided to use this as a momentum to open the eyes of the world of the real China under its' mask. When the west started seeing the lack of human rights in the country, some westerners who were working on the Olympics were to uncomfortable working in the country and resigned fairly quickly. The Chinese government noticed the turmoil occuring and decides to shut down all internet connections dealing with free speech so that the people can stay naiive to the truth. And quite recently, there were debates whether the leaders such as the President of France, Prime Ministers of Britain and Canada and the President of the United States should attend the openning cermonies. The Protests and boycott rallies were gettingfrom bad to worse, and even the pm of Canada stated that if the boycotting rallies were getting stronger, then the country itself will not go to the Olympics altogether. But by doing this, athletes would not be able to participate in the event they were training their whole lives on. Also, if we boycott the Olympics, it may affect the relationships between the west and China. Lastly, by boycotting the Olympics, we would be stepping on the Chinese people's pride and may result very negatively in the futurem, especially in changing China's views such as human rights and a sense of democracy. So, what do you think?

The Olympic boycott isn't really about only Tibet. It's actually about how the Chinese government is currently supporting the Sudanese government with the 21ist century genocide in Darfur, Sudan. China is considered to be the number one benefactor of Sudan's oil, and they basically invest big money to research and "arms" in Sudan. THAT is the cause, not because of Tibet. Celebrities, and Olympic athletes backed out because of this. The issue about Tibet has long died out. And Tibet just manipulated this event and pursued to let the world know of China's cruelty to it for the past half century,Let's face it, Tibet will never be free, the only possible thing China could give them is autocracy. And I doubt that people would really boycott the Olympics, there's a lot at stake if that happens. (T.T")

They should go through with the olympics because it is already so close and they really shouldn't let politics affect the olympics. However, after the olympics has finished the west can then complain about China.

People have trained and waited for so long for this special event that happens every four years. Why take it away from them? They devoted all their time and effort!

What about animal cruelty?
I don't see any difference between the Chinese and US animal cruelty laws.

Anyway, why boycott the Olympics? Is it really turning into a political event?
