The Beijing Olympics was suppose to be of good intentions and many of the Chinese are looking forward to it. However, as most of you know, there has been great turmoil in the country, especially in Tibet, who protests about China's rule. Through historical facts, Tibet was taken over by China in the 1950s and was look down upon, since colonialization was over many years ago. Because of China's rules, the people in Tibet, especially the religious people were not allowed to worship freely. The Dalai Lama and other religious people were chased out of the country and were consistently blamed for wrong doings they had clearly not commit. When the Olympics were decided to be run in China, the Tibetan people decided to use this as a momentum to open the eyes of the world of the real China under its' mask. When the west started seeing the lack of human rights in the country, some westerners who were working on the Olympics were to uncomfortable working in the country and resigned fairly quickly. The Chinese government noticed the turmoil occuring and decides to shut down all internet connections dealing with free speech so that the people can stay naiive to the truth. And quite recently, there were debates whether the leaders such as the President of France, Prime Ministers of Britain and Canada and the President of the United States should attend the openning cermonies. The Protests and boycott rallies were gettingfrom bad to worse, and even the pm of Canada stated that if the boycotting rallies were getting stronger, then the country itself will not go to the Olympics altogether. But by doing this, athletes would not be able to participate in the event they were training their whole lives on. Also, if we boycott the Olympics, it may affect the relationships between the west and China. Lastly, by boycotting the Olympics, we would be stepping on the Chinese people's pride and may result very negatively in the futurem, especially in changing China's views such as human rights and a sense of democracy. So, what do you think?

Tibet was under the chinese rule starting from the 1950s, but before that, tibet had a caste system and sure, the highest (royal) class people obviously had the freedom to worship and do whatever they wanted;however, the people from the lowest class in tibet were slaves. they had NO rights and no real home. they were often chained to their feet when they were working in the fields. Because china took over, the caste system was abolished and these slaves were set free.

Th Dalai Lama was not only exiled from China, but he was also exiled from other countries like nepal and india. Surely, there must be a reason they were blamed for wrongdoings, right?

Why boycott the olympics? what happened to the love of sports and everything the olympics is really about?
The Chinese people put so much time and effort to build those stadiums and celebrate the traditions that came from Greece, and now, people don't want the olympics to continue just because of politics. the chinese government obviously has flaws, just like the governments from ALL the other countries.
And what is up with "having to turn everything in to a democracy?"
why can't people accept other forms of government?
i don't see democracy any good. i live in the U.S. and im not seeing much from our democracy...
...
at least, not from Mr. Bush >.<
im not directing all of this towards you,
just the way people think.
i hope you dont get too offended ^-^

ok... so why didn't people boycott the olympics when it was here in the U.S.?
we can blame the U.S. for a buncha stuff.
...like losing trillions of dollars in the iraq war.
and purposely invading iraq just for the oil, obviously.
-.-
what happened to the love of sports?
why does this stuff have to do with sports???
what does politics even have to do with the olympics?

sorry, i just don't see much connection there.

No, it's the Olympics, it's a time where people come together to set aside differences and compete in things. Politics should stay out of it.

Not to mention I'm sick of how the people are protesting. They're like stopping the ceremonies and most unnecessary is the extinguishing people's torches. A lot of people work hard to get to the Olympics, it means a lot of them and they aren't part of the government they just want to compete or something and instead getting their special moment people are like protesting against them.

Also, a lot of the protesters are just going with the bandwagon. Can most of them tell you what is happening? I mean why now? China always had problems, why are they protesting now? When other people are?

I thought this was going to be bout the quake and olympics. And shouldnt they be caring more bout the quake victims rather than some protesters?

Aside those boycotting, another thing is the calamity that strike China. Due to the earthquake, there are lots of people who died and structures that are totally damaged. I think this could also affect the Olympics.

Nope, but I think soething should be done about the animal cruelty. If we boycotted it then it would ruin it for the athletes who have worked so hard.

You forgot about the U.S. wasting a big amount of resources in the world and the all the pollution its caused.

I am sick of hearing people complaining about how badly Tibet is being treated. It's not like all the Tibetans were so much better off before, so boo-freaking-hoo. If you're going to be pissed about China over this, then you might as well pick out the faults of all the other countries in the world. Do you really want to waste those people's training and carrying that freaking torch around (by the way, what the fuck? I get that it's a tradition and all, but, come on).
And unless you're a vegetarian, don't complain about animal cruelty because, in case you forgot, cows and pigs are animals, too and they get treated like crap.

I don't like the communist China, the threats to invade Taiwan, the unrest in Tibet, stuff like that.

but

Olympic Games should not be a reflection of political views but strictly a contest of the greatest athletes

same. it seems like there's some sort of conspiracy against China. it's probably because it's beginning to become powerful, so it's a threat to other superpower countries.. <_<;
