I grew up speaking cantonese and I have also learnt mandarin and I'd say that Mando sounds a lot better than Canto. Both dialects have that little twang(whatever you call it) like "ma" or "la" but I think the Canto one is stronger and sounds more annoying.

i tried to speak it,
it sounds like something was stuck in my mouth.

hmm, i have a few friends who speak Cantonese, and i have to say it sounds very good when spoken quietly, [why do so many of the older cantonese speakers think everyone is deaf?!] i know a few words [enough to know when some one is insulting / complimenting me] but I would like to learn it though, but it's so complicated with all to those tones. i'll probably have a crack at mandarin one day.

i would have to say "ching, chong wah". do you know how the cantonese name their children? they throw a coke can down the alley *bing, clan, clong, chong*.

You're telling me! It embarrasses me to be around my family when they do that.

I would imagine that a lot of non-Cantonese speakers find it annoying unless they hear it in a soft tone. I know lots of people that think Mandarin sounds better or prettier and I have to half agree but at the same times it sounds so... how do I put this in English... bitchy? I know I sounded super bitchy when I used to speak a little Mandarin.
