"Well before the Middle Ages and during them, homing pigeons were used for pigeon post, taking advantage of a singular quality of this bird, which when taken far from its nest is able to find his way home due to a particularly developed sense of orientation. Messages were then tied around the legs of the pigeon, which was freed and could reach his original nest."

have u guys ever think about this b4? i suddenly have a thought about it today. how does the pigeon know to who should it send? n about "when taken far from its nest is able to find his way home due to a particularly developed sense of orientation" does that mean ppl r petting pigeon at that time?

and does it still possible in todays world? i mean, some ppl myt just shoot the bird, sling it or accidently hit by a golf ball..

You think too much....
I don't know how they train them.

Here's a link about it
http://www.ehow.com/how_2079518_train-homing-pigeons.html

people wouldn't use them now because
1. Bird Flu
2. Troublesome
3. % of post being sent is mild
4. People have windows which keep birds out
5. Airplanes in the sky

........y not just the use the fucking telephone? Phone not working? Try e-mail. Computer down? Try snail-mail. Too impatient to wait for snail-mail? Try driving your lazy ass to the home/place of business of the person you wish to contact.

Anything would be better than using a stupid pidgeon. Imagine all the viruses and shit that they carry.

They used them in World War 2 in both England and Germany. They were quite successful. It led to all sorts of stupid situations like both sides killing off birds of prey which would potentially kill the pigeons. I'm not sure of the logistics of training them, which relies on the bird's natural homing instincts. They were useful when conventional communications (phones radio etc) were down.

The potential to use them is still there. In WW2 they had all the above things mentioned by makimaki_sataan, except the bird flu. If ever the internet "breaks" permanently, like it did in an episode of South Park, we could use them to make our CR posts.

wow, the forums would've suck if you're going to use Pigeons as your posts.
Also, training pigeons is harder than you guys thought. I know, I tried.

The Philippines is one of the countries that's a professional with Pigeon Raising.
I have a total of 20 pigeons here in the roof of my house and I trained them.

So, as a trainer, I think I'll give you my thoughts.
1.) Pigeons don't actually go to the person that you want to like a homing missile. Pigeons are used in being familiar with the place. So, in short, the Pigeon must live in the receiver's place for a week so it can memorize the place easily. A week is the minimum.

2.) Pigeons are smart and they don't want to be caged. That's why you shouldn't really let go of your pigeon and say "Go little pigeon, and send my message to ELIZA or sumthing...". The Pigeon'll just fly away from your territory until you can't even know where he is.

3.) last, Pigeons are suckers.
Do a little clap . *Clap* until the pigeons notices it. The 'Claps' are a sign of saying 'come here' for pigeons
(I really don't know. Somebody just told me that.)
But it works. Give them a little treat and they're yours again. (just do this method if your pigeon "kinda" ran away from you.)
Added:
Oh yeah, grab them as soon as possible. They'll scramble away like maniacs if you don't.

haha. this is the Philippine method. Don't you guys judge me about how wrong I am. I don't even know how sure I am about this.

Yahoo! Pigeons?
AOL Avian Message Service?
MSN Bird Mail?

To answer the OP's question: Yes, it's still possible. It would be too impractical and snail mail would be just as good, and far more convenient, if you want to be romantic.
