ok guys, another double-edged topic. i read this article on cnn.com a couple of days ago and i wanted to hear what other people think of it. don't worry its a short article.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/EDUCATION/01/25/same.sex.schools.ap/index.html?section=cnn_latest

personally i'm against same-sex schools.

"splitting students by sex minimizes distractions, helps them learn better and allows boys and girls to explore subjects they may not otherwise take."

distraction for teenagers may lessen but is that a guarantee that kids would focus on their education more? and what kind of subjects? creating subjects specifically by gender would just widen the gender divide, no one wants to go back to the Victorian era.

what happened to freedom of choice?

we already have enough subjects that are gender dominated, take Politics for example. in my tutorial group of 13 people there's only one female. admittedly politics is a very masculine subject but how will females promote the feminism or even different kinds of theory if theres only males (who's going to be all about 'realism this, realism that') in the classroom. who's going to be urging for a different point of view? and what about home economics, are they going to make it more female orientated? what about guys who like cooking? or boy who have to learn to take care of their homes themselves maybe because of lack of female presence in the house?

lets talk about social implications. i actually consider myself somewhat socially retarded. i spent 4 years in an all-girls Catholic school. i considered it a disadvantage for my social and emotional upbringing just because school is the hub of social development as a teenager and i did not have the expected interaction with the opposite sex which made me do foolish things as an adult. i mean, geez, even for the graduation dance, we werent allowed to bring boys.

then of course the sexual delinquency. public schools house teenagers, and teenagers have hormones. hypothetically wouldnt same-sex schools increase bisexuality and homosexuality just because hormones make one horny enough to inspire lust for the nearest sexually attractive person, regardless gender?

i'd really like to hear your opinions on this and if someone can explain to me why on earth the US is encouraging this educational movement that imo would bring more harm than good, i would be really grateful.

if they were to seperate us then we would be more focused on sneeking into the other school to see the girls. and our education will be damaged.

^^^yes
personally i would h.a.t.e. an all boys school. my step-dad went to an all boys school and i ridicule him all the time about it. i just dont like the idea of all boys and no s. and it could possibly turn straight friends gay which is bad. btw i am not a homophob i just not big on the whole gay thing. oh and i would probably go crazy in that event. i would h.a.t.e uniforms too (for me), i am what you would call a non-conformist ^_^

Doesn't matter much to me. I would consider other things much more important. I suppose education can work well both ways really.

Went to all male high school, but other then that been coed. Maybe it did keep me out of some trouble.

For an issue for my level its something like male/female on the same floor, every other room, same room, eh...

wow all girls school? protest! same sex schools and classes would cause kids to be gender confused. but in bi-gendered classes some girls actually try harder in class just to impress guys *cough*.. anyways.. same sex schools will cause my future kids to be gay.-_-' although i don't really have a probelm with it.
