Warner Bros. has acquired the remake rights to South Korea hit film The Chaser, and the film has already started to gather the same kind of buzz as The Departed – the studio’s last Asian remake.

Variety reports the studio is in talks with William Monahan (who won an Oscar for his work on The Departed) to pen the screenplay and Leonardo DiCaprio to star in the remake. Dan Lin, Doug Davison, Roy Lee and Monahan will be producers on the project. DiCaprio could also have a hand in producing the film.

Warner Bros. picked up the remake rights for the film from Na Hong-jin and paid $1 million plus various incentives. The incentives will be based on how the film does at the box office. Bidangil Pictures’ Kim Su-jin (who is head of the production house) will also have a co-production credit.

The film is loosely based on a real-life serial killer – who was played by Ha Jung-woo (Never Forever).
