No I don't think that. I've read a few OEL(original english language) manga and I liked them Personally if I were to become a manga artist I would probably take a pen name just because it would make me feel more comfortable maybe? Sometimes the art doesn't appeal to me in OEL manga but the same goes for Japanese manga too so...

No, I don't think you have to be Japanese to make a manga.
As long as the art and the story is good, then I think that's all that should matter really ^-^

Cause I mean.. they have Korean manga and stuff too. And they're just as good as Japanese ones~

You definitely don't have to be japanese to be a manga-ka. Even if you can't get it published as an actual manga, you can still serialise it on the internet. People publish their manga through Tokyopop and stuff (I think at least some stuff there isn't Japanese) And of course, there's manhwa. Yeah, yeah, people above have talked all about it already ^^

i came to this forum pretty late and im to lazy to read every comment in here, but first i would like to say that i myself wish to became an manga and/or anime artist but when i looked into it, i found many things that make it hard to go that path in life. i will also like to add that even american comic book/ paperback companies are making mangas now, like dark horse. but if you wish to be one in japan there is only one way you'll get hired in japan and that is if you are the very best, otherwise they only hire japanese first.

there are alot of non-japanese 'manga-kas' who make it somewhat big here and sell their manga at major bookstores.
just find a good publisher, and of course you need a very good story and nice art.

Your works are not manga but just comics if they are published outside Japan. It's probably hard and unrealistic to many people to move to Japan and submit their works there.

But that doesn't mean you can't have pretty drawings and good story. Left to right reading or right to left shouldn't even matter. I guess you will have to be good at drawing, script writing and fashion design to stand out.

And comic artists from other countries can have their own styles and unique cultural experience (e.g. life of teenage girls in your country is different from that in Japan, right? If you are going to create something similar to a shojo manga, why not observe and get inspiration from it?), as well as some Japanese influence in their works. I don't see why that's not a good thing. Many Japanese mangaka are actually inspired by and borrow a lot from European or Chinese traditional cultures and history. Many things in manga are not that original from Japan.

As to anime, a lot of Japanese anime producers outsource some procedures to companies outside Japan. If you work for those companies you may have the chance to work on anime.

at one time i wanted to be a manga-ka. i thought only a selected few non-japanese should be able to make manga. tokyopop is not doing a very good job selecting, cause their american manga-ka are so blatantly american, and i die a little inside everytime i see hideous, obviously non-japanese drawing. so if you want to be one, please ask people if your drawing looks japanese.

Japanese manga don't have a single style. Actually the drawing styles can vary a lot if you read enough manga, especially seinen manga. If by looking Japanese you mean they should look like Vampire Knight or D. Gray Man, etc, I can tell you that the majority of Japanese manga don't look like those.

I do think artists should have their own style instead of reminding you of so and so (whether it's Japanese or not) too much. One should have their demographic in mind when they draw something. That's what everybody should learn from Japanese mangaka.

And I agree with the mangaka supported by a powerful editing team thing and the Shonen Jump team is like Hollywood. Artists in other countries probably don't have much of that. Even if a manga is shonen or seinen, being published in different magazines can make it have a slightly different demographic. The manga industry in Japan is far more developed than many have imagined.
