I think that it's possible. Although what do I know? American style sort of suck as trying to be manga-kas. I just ignore it (really ignore it). Anyway, if you are truly devoted to it and you practice super hard *coughs*, then yes...? -'.-'

Well In my opinion yes and no. "Manga" まんが are Japanese comics. So if you took the time to learn Japanese and wrote and drew your "manga" in Japanese than yes but, If you are in any other part of the world then you're "manga" would be considered a "comic book". But hey, If you're really good, draw backwards and add some hiragana characters in like "ああ!" then maybe people will think you wrote it then translated it. xD

Lol if you write your manga in Japanese FIRST....I say it technically counts.
*does this* People seem shocked when I tell them I'm not from Japan. XD But in order to do this, you have to study the language REALLY hard. I've been studying it for years, four years of which were in a Japanese language class, and do tons of research and practice all the time and I don't think my Japanese is even close to flawless yet. If a real Japanese person stumbled upon my manga and read it, they'd probably be able to tell...... Aside from that, you really need to master the manga style. SO many "American manga artists" who are marketing their work cannot seem to get it right. Their styles are lame, so so easy to tell it's not really manga....like they're drawing a girl who looks like Barbie in a sailor seifuku and just putting anime highlights in her eyes and it's like "UH NO, U FAIL". lol I mean, WHAT is so hard about giving a character big eyes, a tiny nose, a tiny mouth, and undefined lips!? THAT'S ALL YOU HAVE TO DO!! IT'S NOT THE SISTINE CHAPEL!!! XD Duh.........XD |

im not japanese but i still want to become a mangaka so it doesnt really matter. but like here in america, american 'mangakas' just fail to get the essence of a manga. Its not just that the drawing style sucks, but they tend to make it from left to right and a personal thing im picky about is like if you do sound effects, keep to the japanese ones like kira kira, do--n, shiku shiku, nya~. Lastly, if your trying to make a manga at it would be good to learn and use japanese for the manga.

Yes, because Koreans draw Manhwa, while Europeans/Americans draw comic books. Details, details!

BartFargo wrote: No, but I think non-Japanese mangaka have a responsibility to take it seriously and not suck. Well said, sir (or miss)! Let's take a look at some archetypes who fail as mangaka, shall we? The Talentless Ignoramus: spouts crap like "I'm gonna be the best 'maynga' artist ever; Believe it!", but can't draw anything of higher caliber than a stick figure. Gets a... The Half-Asser: has decent skills as an artist, but learned their technique from a "How to Draw Manga" book; incapable of drawing something REMOTELY creative. Gets a... In the end, it's like Gintoki says: "JUST DO IT [well]!!!" (Paraphrased) |

Sure, but deal with otaku rejecting your manga 'cause it's American.
