It all depends on what you consider manga, I think... You could call any comic book manga, and then you could become a "manga ka", but I think that manga includes a certain type of touch, a way of thinking, a type of comedy, that is very different from the ways of thinking or humor of other countries. If you only consider those to be manga, then it's very difficult if you are not a Japanese person to become a manga ka because you will most likely think differently than the Japanese...

Manga Artists can be anyone, as long as they draw characters like anime ppl...
I'm starting to speak non-sensely so if you don't get it I'll explain
like people says music has no boundaries or something like that, it doesn't really matter if you're a Japanese or not. there is just too much manga we know that was drawn by Japanese so we think 'only Japanese can become manga-ka', no it's not!
ok there we go, I'm speaking sense

no..one could hide one's nationality. who knows, some of the best manga is made by non-japanese artists...

anyone can become a manga artist...

it's just that...i guess you could say that ONLY JAPANESE ARTISTS HAVE THE RIGHT to draw mangas. it's a JAPANESE thing. it would be insulting if non-japanese try to take that away from the japanese.

if i were japanese i know that's how i'd feel.

i don't really get it. You said that anyone can be a manga artist in the beginning, and yet later on you add on that only japanese people have the RIGHT the draw mangas. isn't it kinda contradicting yourself? <_<;

I personally do not think that non-japanese mangakas or comic artists are trying to take 'mangas' from the japanese. Since japanese people have produced many mangas since a long way back; i believe that the non-japanese mangakas are just using the long history of japanese manga as a base to start their own.

Besides, i don't think that anyone would be able to TAKE the right of the japanese people drawing manga away from them, since it doesn't belong to them in the first place. Although the japanese may have started the trend of drawing mangas, it does not mean that the right of drawing mangas belongs to only the japanese.

And yea; anyone can become a mangaka if they want! i'm trying to improve my drawing skills and head towards that path, hehe.

'Manga' is a Japanese word, meaning 'JAPANESE comic'. So obviously, it will only work if you are Japanese.
If you are American or whatever, then you'd make a comic book. It's simple.
And Korean manga is called 'mahnwa', so not even that is manga.

I've been dreaming of becoming a manga-ka someday but I dont think I'll be, one day..

You see, I'm not a Japanese and I don't live in Japan but making manga someday is really my dream.

So, for the people who are not Japanese and who doesn't live in Japan but wants to be a manga artist someday, do you think Japanese People are the only ones who can become Manga Artists?

No flames please.

technically mangaka are japanese but i guess there always could be exceptions....honestly, if you really are into this career, you should probably take japanese and master the language, then one day go to japan and try to find work.. it'd be pretty hard, but if you want to be a real mangaka, you can't really stay in the US or where ever your from.
