How ironic, I was given an article on this when I was in high school. Here's what the article basically gave as a definition:

GEEK
1. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
2. a computer expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)
3. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

The term "geek" originally referred to the carnival performers whose act consisted of biting the heads off chickens and eating glass. Over time it came to be applied to anyone who got paid to do work considered odd or bizarre by mainstream society.

The term now enjoys a special status within the technical community, particularly among particularly knowledgeable computer programmers. To identify oneself as a "geek" indicates a recognition that most people still consider programming computers to be a bizarre act, along with a certain fierce satisfaction in being very good at their inglorious profession.

That most software geeks now easily earn twice as much as the average laborer just sweetens their defiant embrace of the term.

NERD
1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.
2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd.

A person who gains pleasure from amassing large quantities of knowledge about subjects often too detailed or complicated for most other people to be bothered with.

Often mistaken for Geeks, who aspire to become nerds, yet lack the intelligence, and end up giving nerds a bad name due to their poor social skills.

Non-nerds are often scared of nerds, due to their detailed knowledge, and therefore seemingly high levels of intelligence - and subsequently denigrate them as much as possible as often as possible.

Nerds exist covertly within the fabric of society, often choosing to 'nerd it up' in private or in the company of fellow nerds. It is for this reason they are feared the most - unlike geeks, who are easily identified, nerds can only be found out when casual conversation reaches a subject that they like "nerding."

(Definitions found in both dictionary.com and urbandictionary.com)

Hope this helps ^^ Because of that article, I define these words by their dictionary meanings and not by their stereotypes and slang.

When someone says nerd/geek, I instantly think of someone like with their pants pulled up too high, big massive specs, weird laugh, goofy teeth and really lanky XD.

There's being a nerd or geek, and then there's acting like a nerd or geek. There're plenty of people who play alot of games, watch anime, do well in school, whatever, and then go out and do other shit too. Then there's the people who do these things and somehow are socially inept and nobody likes them.

In my opinion, being a nerd or geek has nothing to do with it. Some people are just retarded and people wouldn't like 'em anyways.

With that said, I don't think geek or nerd is a particularly negative label. It just means you like or do something that most other people don't.

Someone that would rather spend their time studying and getting good grades than being social and living life a little, people who are usually smart or good at a theoretical subjects(Could be other things like World of warcraft or anything that they use to much time with and because of that they don't interact with other people and become obsessed with it) with big chunky glasses and that sucks in sports etc. Just look it up somewhere and you will propably get a more accurate answer.

To me, the term is used loosely, mostly jokingly, but its probably just me. I'd just describe as intelligent, maybe a little out casted, not too 'physically appealing'. Well, I had to apply to get into the high school I'm in, so less than 100 people get accepted. We're all kind of geeks/nerds. So, when we call each other nerds its like I said, a joke because we all are or we wouldn't be in that school...

A geek/ nerd (to me) is someone who acts smart (regardless of wether or not they are) and (as rude as this sounds) they just have a certain look... glasses, short, etc. (no offense meant towards anyone of course!) I think it's more of a personality than intelligence level. You can be smart and not be a nerd. Congrats on your high ranking by the way.
