Ah, you're right on that one, Brennan. I suppose I forgot about the whole piracy issue, because companies left fansubs alone for so long because they were actually helping anime become profitable internationally... but I guess now that it is profitable, they've outlived their usefulness

I'm watching SDF Macross again.

And I'm falling in love with it all over again.

In my honest opinion, although Macross Frontier is pretty darn good? It still can't hold a candle against the original SDF Macross. The original is epic. You can't beat it in any way in terms of storytelling and pacing. It's where everything began. It's where everything should be compared to.

Seriously now. In the original, the love triangle isn't blatantly as obvious in the first part of the series. In the beginning, it looks as if Hikaru's going to end up with the cute little Minmei. But then stardom intervenes, and through combat Hikaru gets to know Misa more and more, leading to him being torn inbetween what he wants and what he thinks he wants. In the end it's heart-wrenching, because his indecision just leads to him hurting people.

Meanwhile, in Macross Frontier, the so-called love triangle is little more than a harem of two, with Alitoh being a piece of wood that ignores their feelings because he's a cool guy that doesn't care. Honestly, he's a pouty little emo kid that's rebelling from his father by being a pilot. Way to go.

Hikaru was an excellent character because he was an everyday man. He wasn't elite. He wasn't excellent. He was an above average pilot who got dragged into the war by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He has to deal with nagging superiors (Misa Hayase) and subordinates who are better than him (Max Jenius), while trying to figure out his love life and trying to obtain te one thing that he can't get (Lynn Minmei). In the end he settles for second best (or first best, depending on your preference). He isn't a hero. He's a guy trying to live his life.

Who's Alitoh? A rich kid who's running away from his overbearing father, has a natural talent for flying, acts heroic, and has girls fawning over his good looks.

Hikaru > Alitoh.

Oh. And if it's any indication, Ozma Lee is probably going to kick the bucket at some point in the show. I have a strong feeling that his role is strongly like Roy Fokker.

Yup, I like Ichijo hikaru character how he hate the war and never want to be a hero, your (above) average joe in the wrong place at the wrong time.

But when i think about it harder, this kind of character is kinda common at that time, its kinda like a trend. Well if u watch alot of anime of 80's & early 90's, u will bump alot of this type of character.

Then, there is seasons where the main character of most the anime almost kinda same, stupidly heroic, charging without anythought, and certain time very emo, like bleach & naruto for example.(no offense)

I guess there are too much anime out there that most of them just recyle the old idea, abit of this and that. Because of that, i enjoy more old anime/filem/drama as they are more original and somehow i feel like they put more effort on story telling rather than fancy effect.

IMO, what make certain anime/filem/drama shine more than the rest of their competitor is their story telling, and sometime attention to small details.

Legend of galactic heroes really blow up my mind. Even though i just watch it recently, but the way they told to story, how the plot develop, attention to details, and man, they really do surprise me. I feel like a bullet went through my heart when they put surprise on my favourite character, just like Roy Fokker. I wish these character would live forever, but because of that impact, that raise those anime above all my list.

For all you Macross Fans out there!

A spanish-made AMV featuring the launch of the SDF-2 Megaroad-01, which carried Hikaru Icijyo, Misa Hayase, and Lynn Minmei, which disappeared mysteriously en route to the galactic core.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=pmfy-APs9b4&feature=related

Also, further proof that Mari Iijima is godlike: Not only was she Lynn Minmei in the Japanese dub, but she's ALSO Lynn Minmei in the ADV 2006 English Dub. (Incidentally, ADV screwed up that one, the Harmony Gold voice acting for Robotech is far better).

More Macross Goodies:

Frame By Frame reproduction of SDF Macross Opening: EXCEPT IN CHIBI FORM.

Also, one of the best Macross short's I've ever seen, from the DYRL PSX game.

I've been a Macross fan since it was released back in 82! I think Macross Frontier is a ton of good for the Macross Franchise. Let's hope they work things out with that damned Harmony Gold...

Haha most of the old school Macross guys hate 7(yes they did over-recycle animation in the early episodes). Well I LOVE Macross 7... LISTEN TO MY SONG I love the new Macross series, but I really love all their throwbacks. Of course Dynamite 7 is basically just an extension of Macross 7, and i liked it. Macross Zero was pretty good too.

^Same here buddy!!

i also LOVE MACROSS 7!!! the reason why they did so much recycle animation was because producing Macross Plus ate most of the budget.

Dynamite 7 was awesome, the combination of the music and the scenary in the last part of the OVA was truely beautiful!

I think that Macross 7 could have been a lot better if they had polished a few concepts and didn't use a buttload of recycled scenes. I mean the concept of using the power of song as a weapon is ... interesting ..., but the way they introduced it and developed it in the story wasn't that great. To be honest, Macross 7 Dynamite, as I've said previously, was the best one of that particular series. (Maybe because they didn't have song energy etc in that show). If they had used that same spirit in the main series, that would have been awesome.

Well basically, that series is kinda "U love it or hate it" category.
Even with all the negative response they throw on macross 7, i still decided to watch that series. Well I can't make any judgement if i didn't watch that series.
And i wish i never watch it in the first place....................Basara already brainwashing me with his song first half of the series, and he create a built in media player in my head and he put all of his song and he put it in auto loop mode and have been runnin for a month now, and that make me thinking "Oh My GOD I LOVE ALL OF HIS SONG!!"
-sigh-
I want my normal brainwave back!
