If we are going by films, I'd give the award to Ghost in The Shell.

And as for shows? It maybe a little to quick from me to say it cos I just watched it, but I can easily say that Puella Magi Madoka Magica was an enthralling experience for me.

Street Fighter The Animated Movie was the first anime I rented on VHS knowing it was from Japan. Ghost In The Shell was second, followed by Akira (the original dub). This was about the time I found out, many of the cartoons I grew up with in the 80's were based of or a combination of anime at the time.
Voltron = Go Lion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.
Robotech = The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA.
I nearly shit myself when I found out Japan had done more then the North American run of Transformers, I then spent a good chunk of my adulthood and money tracking down bootlegs, until recently when SHOUT released them all subtitled.
The internet opened my eyes on the shit-tastic job DIC did with Sailor Moon and started getting me into others as well. Tenchi Muyo, Bubblegum Crisis 2040, X, Tenjou Tenge, Paranoia Agent, etc.
By now, I am open to just about anything.

Favourite Anime of all time? This is hard.. but..

(1) Naruto (DUH)
(2) School Rumble
(3) Dragonball
(4) Bleach
(5) One Piece

I know School Rumble is the odd one out.. but to me... it's very unique and until today.. I have this uneasy feeling about how Eri and Harima should have ended up together! I hate cliffhanger endings! just draw me something Kobayashi!

As for the rest, well... yuyu hangkusho + Slam Dunk + Death Note + etc etc so many good mangas but the 5 above are the ones that got me really hooked into anime and manga!

Ano Hana - It was simply beautiful. I enjoyed every episode; the story was quite intriguing and the ending left me speechless. Just simply beautiful. Please watch it if you haven't.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - This wasn't the average magical girl anime I thought it was going to be when I first started it. It's more than that. The plot twists and psychological aspects made it much more interesting and worth watching. The story was also beautiful in this one and I enjoyed every episode. I got angry at some of the characters, felt what some of them felt, and knew what some were thinking. This goes to show how great of anime it is; I don't always connect with the characters of an anime, but I did with this one.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! - I loved the art, story, everything about it. I also connected with the characters in this series, and the story left a great message. Truly an inspirational anime; I enjoyed every second of it. The sorrow of not being able to be who you truly are due to society's view of the norm; that's what this anime is about. There are also cute and funny aspects to it, which I think are great additions.

I haven't seen many anime, but out of the ones I have, these are some of the best.

Some of my personal favorite anime right now are Blue Exorcist (Ao No Exorcist): The character development is great the story line is not to predicable, it balances action, drama, and comedy well. It is an all around wonderful anime with great artwork. Another wonderful anime is Canaan: It is has wonderful artwork, a truly developed story line with characters more unique then the next. If you like action I would recommend both, but if you like guns and military I would watch Canaan verses Blue Exorcist that is more magical based.
