It's a toss up between FLCL and Madoka Magica. Before it was just FLCL with Madoka as a close second, but over time my love for Madoka has only grown.

FLCL I loved since I first aired on Adult Swim when I was ten, and I have since seen it many times and it only gets better with each viewing. To me, it encompasses everything about anime, both the good and the bad, but puts it all together in a way that even the things you can say is wrong with it works. It's like watching a mad scientist making a special concoction. You have no idea what he's doing, and you question his methods and some of the things he's putting in, but you love watching him work, his manic energy, and confidence in his work to make sure he gives you something unforgettable. In the end you have a concoction that is unique in look, smell, and taste, but you leave content and satisfied. FLCL can be ugly and unpleasant, but it can also be beautiful and calming. It can be over-the-top, and it can be subtle. It can be dark, and it can be happy. It can be romantic, and it can be sexual. It can make no sense whatsoever and it can make so much sense. It's a unique experience, and I can't think of a single anime quite like it. Even things like Gurren Lagann, Panty and Stocking, and Kill la Kill, while they do look like it, aren't anything like it. It's it own entity. I know I sound pretty pretentious, but that's how I always saw it. FLCL has always been hard for me to explain why i love it.

As for Madoka Magica, it's a very important series to me. It's the anime that probably inspired me the most to become a writer. The way it handles it's characters and story, and the way it retains a dark tone without resorting to excessive violence and gore, but even so it wasn't overly dark, and still works as a proper deconstruction of Magical Girl anime. While most other magical girl anime focuses on the light fantasies, Madoka chooses to focus on dark realities. While other shows is about the child-like wonderment of having magical powers, in Madoka, that way of thinking can only get you so far, if it hasn't already killed you. Madoka is less a magical girl show and more a survival story, where if the witches haven't kill you yet, you're slow decent into darkness surely will. Yet, even though many cruel things happen to the characters, it never came across like the writer hated his characters or the viewers. Urobuchi stated that he intended it to be a "healing" anime, and after watching it to the end, I agree with him. Throughout the anime, there was still this optimism, that no matter how bad things get to never give up hope, and though that belief may get challenged, never give up. It's only natural that throughout your life you are going to face challenges, and you're going to make mistakes, but don't let them define who you are and instead let them help build you into the person you'll become. By the end of the anime, you're not thinking about how dark the show was, you're thinking "man, that was a really good anime." (Unless, you know, you hated it.) Other than that, I loved all the characters, with Madoka and Homura being my favorite, I loved the style and look, and the music is some of the best in anime. In the three years since it release, I've watched it many, many times, maybe even more than FLCL, and it's also the only anime where I'd go completely fanboy over and (try to) buy every piece of merchandise for it. It was also the first and only newly airing anime to have me hooked every week. Each week I'd count down the days to when the next episode of Madoka would air.

My favorite anime would be Toradora. I loved all the characters and everybody had their own special moments. Toradora really hits you in the feels too. The ending's also really satsifying.

Shiki. It's simply awesome, I just failed to find a flaw in it. The story is executed perfectly, The characters are not disposable unlike other Mystery/Horror anime, the Animation is good, the OST is perfect. The acting is perfect both Dub and Sub. So 10/10. What else?

Mushishi, far and away. It's so different from many others I've seen. And I love the mystical aspect of it. I also think it's got some of the best animation.
