Anything by Robert Cormier is an excellent read. The Chocolate War, Tenderness, and We All Fall Down, being my personal favorites.

Note: Do not read his books if you only like happy endings.

If you haven't read it, I say read 1984, by Orwell. Remember though that it was written around 1950, so he really gave contemporary authors so many ideas I think. That's a book I would recommend to anyone. Same goes for Franny and Zoey, by Salinger. .After that, I really like Oscar Wilde. Although, I don't think he's for everyone. Oh and pretty much any book by Kurt Vonnegut.

I'd recommend:

A Game Of Thrones by George R.R. Martin (Got all the books so far, want more!!)
The Malazan Tale of the Fallen by Steven Erikson (My ABSOLUTELY favourite series, I mean, it's hard to get better than this.. Been re-reading it over and over...
The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind (In one of the latest book, it was so exciting that my heart hammered like hell O_O)

I'd like to be recommended anything similar to The Malazan Tale of the Fallen.

He dragged that series out so much, there were so many unneeded developments that contributed to the plot in no way. I ended up pretty much left Rand off on his own while reading Matt and Perrin's chapters.

As for suggestions Terry Pratchet, he is good for satirical comedy all wrapped up in a nicely created fantasy world that manages to reflect out own in some ways. Neil Gaiman tends to write some fairly odd fantasy books that are full of suspense.

i would highly recommend The SevenWaters Trilogy written by Juliet Marillier .

Book 1 - Daughter of the Forest
Book 2 - Son of the Shadows
Book 3 - Child of the Prophecy

its a wonderful retelling of an ancient celtic legend . im sure most of you can remember this legend, its about a young woman with 7 brothers who get cursed and transformed into swans by their evil stepmother who is a powerful sorceress that has bewitched their father . the young woman sets off to break the curse by sewing 7 sweaters of a dangerous nettle, but one of the conditions is she is never permitted to speak, not even to cry out when cut by the nettles. not even when she is raped ...

i thoroughly enjoyed all 3 of these novels, and would recommend them to anyone who enjoys fantasy, romance, drama, action, etc . ^.^
