Philippines ABS-CBN has the franchise for the Mexican soap "Betty La Fea" and television director, Wenn Deramas has confirmed that actress Bea Alonzo will play the lead role for the Philippine version.

The said adaptation has no confirmed official title yet but it is about an intelligent but plain girl working in the glamorous world of fashion. American television has it's own version of this soap which is entitled Ugly Betty.

A Grand Celebration of Lea’s Life, Monday May 19, 2008 Philippines

The title of the show is Lea, My Life... On Stage. Presented by Enfakid and produced by Ambient Events, it will be held at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on May 23 and 24 at 8 p.m.

The Lea in the title is of course, Lea Salonga. My Life refers to the past 30 years she has spent performing in concert, on stage, films and television. And On stage means that her life will be celebrated, lavished over, revealed, unraveled, dissected, justified and whatever else you can do in one spectacular stage presentation.

It has to be truly spectacular because a big chunk of Lea’s life played out against the background of dazzling musicals in the Philippines, London’s West End, New York’s Broadway and the Disney studios in Hollywood. The show will not only be about Lea’s life but also about memorable songs.

Lea’s first ever stage appearance was as one of the king’s children in the Repertory Philippines’ production of The King and I. Then like a snowball, she went to a bigger one in her next, Annie, then The Sound of Music, The Goodbye Girl, Paper Moon, The Fantasticks, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Fiddler on the Roof, The Rose Tattoo and others. She did not sing in some of them but those roles were also important for her training as an actress.

The West End came next in 1990 when out of thousands of young actresses from all over the world, Lea was chosen to play the title role in the original production of Miss Saigon. Take note of that term “original production.” That means that she did not just play any role. She was tapped to introduce one and make it her very own. That is just like building My Fair Lady around Julie Andrews.

Her work in Miss Saigon earned Lea the Laurence Olivier Award. From there, it was but a little skip to Broadway where she won the Tony, the Drama Desk, the Outer Critics Circle and the Theater World Awards, all in 1991. With those under her belt, Lea went to other roles, Eponine in Les Miserables, Sandy in Grease. She sang for Disney, first as Jasmine in Aladdin and later on as Mulan. She did concerts, the Carnegie Hall in the US and several back home.

In between all these, Lea was also a recording and TV star. The recording was something she started when she was 10 with Small Voice and continues to do occasionally. Her latest is titled Inspired. Then as a kid, she once had a weekly show with her brother Gerald, but save for the movie Redwood Curtain with John Lithgow, she has not really done much television since. She also starred in a few Filipino films.

And then not to forget, somewhere along these past few years, Lea found time to fall in love, get married and have a baby girl.

The show promises to show Lea’s life and there is such an array of incredible material to work with that will make it truly memorable. I do not know if Lea is coming up with any earthshaking revelations. She has always been very private about her personal life and I do not think that even a show built around her on the anniversary of 30 momentous years would be enough for her to ditch the refrigerator tag.

On the other hand though, she has never needed tabloid stuff to stay famous. All that she needs to do to exude warmth is to sing and that is what the audience will be getting lots of with My Life.

Joining Lea will be Freddie Santos, who was Daddy Warbucks to her Annie as director, her kid brother Gerald, whose career choice she obviously influenced as musical director with his Filharmonika Orchestra, plus guests Menchu Yulo, Chari Arespacochaga, Analin Bantug, Robbie Guevarra, Michael Williams and Raul Montesa.

Lea, My Life... On Stage is presented by ABS-CBN, The Philippine Star, Sofitel Philippine Plaza, 105.1 Crossover, BPI Express Credit, Hapee and Tokyo Tokyo. Contributors are Bayo, Sony BMG, Jewelmer, People Asia, Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila and supporters are National Bookstore, Toys R’Us, Gymboree and Powerbooks. Tickets are available at Ticketworld with tel. no. 891-9999.

"Richard takes the backseat for mom", Thursday May 15, 2008 Philippines

Richard Gutierrez is his generation's matinee idol. He doesn't mind playing support role, especially to his mom Annabelle Rama who is making a comeback via Regal Entertainment and GMA Films' My Monster Mom, opposite real-life husband Eddie Gutierrez and only daughter Ruffa Gutierrez-Bektas.

Richard's cameo in My Monster Mom is as irresistible as the Star Cinema movie where he co-stars with KC Concepcion. Besides, how can you say no to someone who bore you with utmost care for nine months and raises hell to come to your defense?

"It's new and exciting," says Richard of his latest family comedy movie. "I'm playing my dad. Actually, we share the same character. It's a fun experience to work again with Rhian (Ramos) and direk Joey (Reyes). It is my first time to work with my ate, my dad and my mom. It's not a dream movie but it is one I will cherish. My character's appearance is short and minimal but it is fun."

In My Monster Mom, Richard plays the young Waldo who is captivated by Esme's beauty. As expected, he pursues the young lady until he wins her heart. Their love is blessed with a child named Abby who will be played by Ruffa when she turns out to be a cosmopolitan daughter of the older and wiser Waldo (Eddie) and Esme (Annabelle). The movie also revolves around the mother and daughter relationship of Abby and Esme as the latter reaches out to her Westernized child. My Monster Mom, says Richard, gives him the opportunity to see his parents and sister often and bond with them. It is also a breather from his hectic schedule. Also in the movie are JC de Vera, Mart Escudero, Bubbles Paraiso, Iwa Moto and Michelle Madrigal.

Although televiewers have seen GMA 7's top male artist on telefantasya projects like Mulawin, Sugo, Captain Barbell and Kamandag, Richard makes sure he cooks up something different for his fans. One of his soon-to-be-released projects with GMA allows him to get involved creatively from writing the script to pre-production.

"I'll play a normal human being this time around," shares Richard. "It's a love story with action. GMA executives give me the freedom to be involved and I can give suggestions on my character. Since I've been acting for years now, I think I know how the process works and what my audience wants."

Is Richard afraid of getting stereotyped in action-fantasy TV series?

"That's my momentum right now and I don't want to break it," he replies. "Drama scripts will always be there. While I'm still young and can do action scenes, I will do it. A lot of my fans want that, too."

After five hit TV series and movies like Let the Love Begin, Mulawin The Movie, I Will Always Love You, The Promise and My Best Friend's Wedding, Richard seems far from slowing down in exploring what he can offer. He couldn't help but be thankful and look forward to better years in showbiz.

"I couldn't ask for more," says Richard who is now in Dubai to shoot his and Heart Evangelista's opening scenes for Codename: Asero. "I'm working with the great minds, with the great network. They let me grow as an artist. There's always pressure but I feel this is just the beginning."

Part of Richard's plans is to star in an indie movie and direct it. He says he wants to play an offbeat role which will challenge the actor in him. It might be the character that will give him his first acting award.

"I'm not rushing although it is one of my goals," says Richard. "I'm just taking my time. The right project will come. (For my career) I'm open-minded about pairing with other actresses for as long as there's chemistry. I don't want to be tied down to just one leading lady. My career is constantly changing and so is my craft."

Does his mom's "monstrous" personality, meaning being strict and frank, work to his advantage?

"I don't know. I'm not sure," Richard answers. "She is always there for me. And I appreciate that. She's been in the industry for so long and she knows the ins and outs. She loves me and my career." - Jerry Donato/Philstar

"Kim: Everybody’s kind of girl", Thursday May 22, 2008 Philippines

While most girls her age seem to change overnight into a prim and proper lady upon reaching the point of maturity, Kim Chiu still exudes the charming innocence and young bubbly persona that reflect in every character she portrays in the big and small screens.

This may come as a surprise to those who have followed her career — and perceived her to be too serious in dealing with life — since the day she entered Big Brother’s house as the lone representative from the Visayas to ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition years back and won in the contest by a landslide of text votes.

Yes, Kim has sad stories to share and problems to deal with yet she handles them with ease especially now that acting has not only become an outlet to pour all her emotions. It is also a way of supporting her siblings’ education and contributing to daily family expenses. The saccharine character, jubilant side of 18-year-old Kim is more visible these days.

She giggles and shrieks in delight upon hearing praises from the entertainment press during a pocket interview after watching the teaser of Kim’s latest TV project and Kapamilya network’s Pinoy version of the Koreanovela My Girl to air weeknights starting May 26.

“I know I gave my best here in playing Jasmine. It’s hard to convince or please everybody to my kind of acting, I just hope to deliver the character well like the Korean actress who initially played the role,” Kim says.

And she did. Not only because the Jasmine character has the same energetic and happy disposition like Kim and most Pinoys possess even in the most trying times but Kim has also improved in her acting which always vividly shows in every project that falls on her lap. The seriousness with which Kim plays as Elisa on Maligno and Jasmine on My Girl show how much she has improved as an actress.

Acting workshops, Kim admits, contribute in bringing out the actress in her and help in getting the feel of whatever character she is tasked to portray. With My Girl, the doe-eyed Chinese lass from Cebu underwent a five-hour Sunday acting workshop with the other cast members which started in January until April. The role also requires Kim to learn Mandarin and although her physical features fit the series well Kim still needs to completely get the Jasmine look by wearing the same hairstyle and having her makeup done by a Korean. Those colorful clothes will also surely catch televiewers’ interest.

“But the story has a different flavor as televiewers will witness how the Koreanovela is being treated in a Pinoy manner. It has drama, stories about family, love and friendship,” Kim shares.

There are scenes, Kim says, that display how Pinoys handle the daily battles of life in a less serious way — to the point of just shrugging our shoulders and laughing them off. Location shoots will display the richness of our country complete with props that are truly Pinoy like jeepneys, sorbetes (dirty ice cream) cart and mangoes instead of those oranges we see on the Koreanovela.

Will there also be scenes that might give away the real score between her and leading man Gerald Anderson who gifted her with a pink Ford Lynx during her 18th birthday last April 19? Kim denies having a relationship with her perennial screen partner and PBB co-housemate even if they used to exchange expensive gifts. Prior to the customized car, Kim gave Gerald a wakeboarding set worth P50,000 on his birthday last March.

“There would be some kissing scenes in the latter part of the story. My dad asked me to return the car because it’s too expensive but Gerald said no. He said he really intended the car for me,” Kim replies, still insisting that they are not an item.

And even if Gerald cannot call Kim “my girl” yet, Kim will be every televiewer’s girl when My Girl starts airing after Lobo.

Toni Gonzaga: ‘I’m just lucky’, Thursday May 22, 2008 Philippines

Toni Gonzaga is the star of several hit movies, host of a number of hit shows, and singer with two platinum-award winning albums. But for all of her success, she believes that it’s all due to luck.

“I think in this business, 80 percent is luck, 10 percent is attitude, and 10 percent is talent. That’s it for me. I’m speaking for myself,” she explains during the recent launch of her third album, Love Is… Her third album contains her renditions of all-time favorites, such as You’re In Love, If I Give You My Heart, Take Me, I’ll Follow You, Insensitive, Steep, I’ve Been Waiting, and Someone’s Always Saying Goodbye. There’s also an original composition, Incapable, included in the album.

“I know that I can do so many things. But I also know that someone out there can do so much more and so much better than I do. I’m just so fortunate that I’ve been given the chances and the breaks and I was blessed with luck.”

Luck is definitely on her side. Toni is currently one of the bestselling local recording artists. Her second album, Falling In Love, is a big hit, selling a whopping 29,000 units--despite the music piracy problem. Her record label, Star Records, adds that the album is continuing to sell well.

While she is flattered with the platinum and multi-media star monickers that have been bestowed on her, she realizes that they also carry some pressure. “When you’re in the business and people start to appreciate you and recognize your abilities and how you do your work, it’s flattering and overwhelming. But at the same time, it’s something that you don’t want to put into your head,” Toni explains. “I just want it to embrace but not to put it in my system.”

She believes that these names mean she has to live up to them, to prove herself worthy. “You have to prove yourself more and more every year and it does not stop,” she ends.
