KC & Richard Help End the Network War
Friday May 23, 2008 Philippines

The whole thing is, in a way, reminiscent of Romeo & Juliet — you know, a boy and a girl from warring families falling deeply in love with each other.

I mean, the teamup in two movies of Richard Gutierrez and KC Concepcion which was initially deemed impossible because the two are under exclusive contract with fiercely-rival networks, GMA 7 (Richard) and ABS-CBN (KC).

A few weeks ago, Richard entered “enemy” territory and signed a contract with Star Cinema, ABS-CBN’s sister company, as the leading man of KC in her first movie to be produced by Star Cinema. Yesterday, it was KC’s turn to set foot in the “rival” turf to sign a contract as Richard’s leading lady in the Valentine (2009) presentation of GMA Films, GMA (TV’s) affiliate company.

Hopefully, KC and Richard’s teamup will lead to the end of the long-drawn network war (between ABS-CBN and GMA) that turned oh-so-ugly several weeks ago when the two stations engaged in an on-air ratings war that drove the public crazy.

But — keep your fingers crossed — let’s hope that, unlike in the Shakespeare classic, this positive development will end happily ever after.

According to Annette Gozon-Abrogar, GMA Films head, the idea was toyed around with one morning by Noel Ferrer (GMA Films’ Project Development manager and head of synergy) and Joey Abacan (VP of GMA Program Management), “in an effort to reach out to the other network and set a good example to the industry.”

Said Annette, “Then, we made a public announcement that GMA Films was open to the possibility of a co-production deal with Star Cinema.”

Easier said than done? Can the “Capulets” and the “Montagues” bury the hatchet that easily and meet on common ground?

Anyway, after all the hitches and the stumbling blocks and the twists and turns, the impossible was made possible.

The Star Cinema movie, to be shown starting on Aug. 27 this year as agreed upon (and not during the Metro Filmfest in December), is a light romance to be filmed partly in Greece. Shooting starts on May 28.

The GMA movie, with Regal Films as co-producer, will reel off in September and, also as agreed upon, will be shown as a Valentine offering next. It’s titled When I Met You (inspired by the APO song), with Joey Javier Reyes as director.

The two “warring” networks have started nodding “Peace be with you!” to each other.

Nice to, as the ’70s Flower Power battle cry went, “Make love, not war,” isn’t it?

" Sandara Park joins new girl group?",
Monday June 9, 2008 Korea

As if there wasn’t enough competition already. Another girl group is in the works for YG Entertainment. Trying to drum up interest by calling it the “female Big Bang,” the group will feature Park Bom, Gong Minji and CL so far. But, YG Entertainment is considering Sandara Park as a possible 4th member of the triumvirate.

Sandara Park started her showbiz career in 2004 after joining the star search “Star Circle Quest” in the Philippines. The 24 year old recently appeared in Gummy’s “I’m Sorry” MV with Big Bang’s T.O.P.

Actor Rudy Fernandez dies,
Monday June 9, 2008 Philippines

Actor Rudy Fernandez dies
by BOY VILLASANTA
abs-cbnNEWS.com

Actor Rudy Fernandez died at 6:15 Saturday morning at his home in Joeylane Street in White Plains in Quezon City due to a lingering illness.

He was 55.

After years of suffering from peri-ampullary cancer, Rudy succumbed to death in the presence of his wife, actress Lorna Tolentino, and sons Renz Marion and Raphael Fernandez. He also has a son, Mark Anthony, also an actor, with former partner, actress Alma Moreno.

Minutes after the official announcement of his death, people from all sides of showbiz sent the sad news to one another via text or phone calls.

Two days before his demise, Lorna issued a statement that she was ready to accept his husband’s sad fate. “I am entrusting his life to the Lord,” said the actress in her message.

Yet, she hoped that Rudy would still miraculously recover.

During these last few months, Rudy and Lorna were shuttling between the US and the country for medical treatment of the actor’s cancer.

They were recently advised by the patient’s doctors in the US to stay in a Philippine hospital for treatment.

Fernandez was confined at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan for almost a month.

Before he was taken home, Senator Jinggoy Estrada, one of Rudy’s bosom friends, said during an interview that Rudy tried to fight his illness but couldn’t hide the real state of his health. He said Rudy’s tummy was already bloated and his eyes and skin were yellowish, all symptoms of the deadly cancer.

The last time Estrada paid Rudy a visit in the hospital, the patient was agonizing. “Hirap na hirap na ako. (I can’t bear this anymore),” Fernandez was heard complaining.

Meanwhile, Senator Ramon 'Bong' Revilla, another one of Rudy’s close pals, and colleagues in the film community, called on the public to say prayers for Fernandez..

Rudy’s final wish was to be laid to rest at the Heritage Park along C-5 in Taguig City.

Revilla told radio station dzMM Saturday that Fernandez's remains were immediately brought to the Heritage Park in Taguig City for the wake.

He said the public can pay their respects at the park.

Fernandez became famous for his action films such as "Baby Ama," and "Markang Bungo."

Fernandez has won best actor awards for his film, "Batuigas...Pasukuin si Waway," and "Victor Corpuz".
